Trailer Update

Postby Loren » Sun Jan 22, 2012 12:51 am

The trailer followed Mike Dassati Dasatti Das D. home today. He's eager to do some work on it before the next event, and I certainly wasn't going to stand in his way!

I'll let him tell us what he has in mind, and if anyone has any suggestions for other things that he might be willing to tackle while he has possession of the trailer, let's hear it.

Steve, FYI, I authorized up to $200 for materials and suggested that if more is required that he check with you to make sure it fits the budget.

Central AC would be nice :)

Seriously, what is he going to do ? I'd bet that the wheel bearings could use repacking.

Where is the trailer now located?

Suggestions:

Paint or mark the tire PSI above the fender.
Mount the trailer lug wrench, jack, etc to the trailer so we don't have to unload to find the tech box. Also, I was unaware that the tech box is taken out of the trailer occasionally for maintenance etc.

Oh, it's very much NOT! I looked in there a month ago after the last rain and it was full of rusty crap, a bunch of old obsolete stuff that we don't use (we used to have 3x5 number placards for all the cars, for instance), and I'm sure hadn't been looked at seriously in at least 5-6 years! So, Brian cleaned it up and we stocked it with an assortment of (cheap) hand tools and some common emergency auto supplies, like brake fluid, ATF, etc.

We should try to remember to look at it when we do our annual(ish) trailer cleaning sessions instead of just moving it out and moving it back in!

What caught my attention was the tires used to hold the monitor, seemed like they were taking up quite a bit of space in the trailer. Plus no one really wants to load and unload them. I fab'd a steel beam to suspend the monitor, looks good so far.

I also wanted to add some pass through locations near the window to avoid running wires through the open window.

I rebuilt the generator shroud, it's a little smaller and easier to handle.

I'll look at adding some shelves this week as well.

If anyone is interested in coming buy to help clean it out, your more than welcome. I'm in Wesley Chapel and am usually home by 5.

I've seen some photos, Mike's doing some great fabrication work on this.

We looked into adding shelves in the past but couldn't find much in the way of solid beams to bolt to. Let us know if you are able to figure something else out.

I was thinking the same thing, oh and did we get the window leak fixed that's in front of the timing counter ?

There are no solid beams. this is an inexpensive trailer built with z posts. I wouldn't depend on how much weight a shelf would hold unless there were legs on it.

Good reply. Nothing against Mike's work, but the tire stands that Howard made work really well, and they make it easier to re~ locate the monitor if weather is an issue. Plus those heavy tires wont tip over in high winds. Just my 2¢ :)

Good news! Mike is done with upgrades to the trailer and has returned it to storage. He did some great work, including the new integrated monitor stand, wire pass-throughs for timing, a fancy slide-out step, and some new shelving, plus some other stuff I probably forgot.

Huge thanks for taking the initiative to make some improvements, Mike!

Nobody jumped on Mike's request for cleaning help, so the trailer is still a bit of a mess. If a couple people wanted to take charge, Saturday's autocross would be a good time to give it a once over while it's mostly empty, either just before we get started, or right before we load up. We have a broom. Some other cleaning supplies would help. Stuff like Windex/409 cleaner, paper towels, some anti-funk spray for the helmets, that sort of thing.

When we dedicate a day to doing this, it usually takes around 2 hours... and most of that time is spend unloading and loading the trailer! Would be a real time/effort saver if a couple people would do it at an event.

I'll just leave that out there. 8-)

Isn't that the truth. If we get to setup course Friday night, it would be a breeze for a couple of us to knock that out in the morning. If not, half an hour at the end of the event would be a breeze before we load the trailer back up. I can bring window cleaner and a multi-cleaner like 409. Can someone grab a can of lysol disinfectant for the helmets? We should probably get a couple of cans and make sure to start doing that at the end of each event...rain or shine.

Does this mean that the trailer is back at Howard's?

Do you need the trailer on Friday for setup?

Should we discuss this here or the event thread?

Yes.

Sort of, but it's taken care of.

Nothing to discuss, we've got it covered. :thumbwink:

Just wanted to say I saw the upgrades Mike and others did Saturday. Awesome job guys ! Really like the shelves, new door step, the wire pass thru ports, the door holder that keeps the door from closing in the wind, and the monitor stand/mount is great !

My only complaint is I didn't see the Sub Zero beer keg cooler with the tap mounted on the outside, guess it wasn't in the budget . :|
