New to the area

Postby lddavis91 » Wed Feb 13, 2013 6:17 pm

So I sort of introduced myself already in the other thread, but thought I'd do something a bit more official. I'm new to the area, moving down from Raleigh, NC where I've lived the past 15 years. I'm a software engineer with Oracle by trade to support my automotive addiction. Currently living in an apartment on a month to month lease in Clearwater waiting for what will hopefully be an eventual short sale approval on a house in Belleair Bluffs I've been under contract on for the past 2 1/2 months.

I've been autocrossing since 1997 and been a car nut all my life. I've had quite a few different cars over the years and have sampled most every engine/drive-train configuration. I've gradually evolved from the guy who got his kicks killing Mustang V8s with FWD 4 cylinder imports at the 1/8th mile drag strip to being a lover of Mustangs, domestic V8s and RWD.

My current stable of vehciles includes:

2008 MX-5 - (daily driver duty) picked this up about a year ago and have put over 15K miles on it including a trip down to Key West in September. This car replaced my long lived '96 Miata that I put nearly 100K miles on, 3 years of which it had an intercooled supercharger setup and 215whp. I love this thing, really nice improvement as a daily driver/road car over the old one while retaining what makes a Miata great. This is my backup autocrosser for when my old domestics are bustified, which happens often.

1992 Corvette - (autocross beast) - affectionately known as the "banana beast" I've had this car for 5 years and have dumped way too much money in suspension and engine to make it almost as fast as a stock C6 Z06. It has a 383 stroker with 11.8:1 compression ratio and forged internals etc. Built this engine myself and proud to say it made 413 whp and 390 wtq. When its not broken it sounds glorious and is an absolute hoot to drive. I love and hate this car at the same time.

1994 Mustang Cobra - (track rat) - I've only had this one about 6 months, mostly stock 5.0, purchased with the intentions of beating the snot out of on track. Because its old and a domestic, it hasn't made a track event yet. :-D

2000 Navigator - (tow beast) because if you have old domestic cars, you gotta have a tow rig.

I've not only autocrossed for a long time but I've also been an event chair many times and spent several years as a club officer with the Tarheel Sports Car Club. Looking to get involved more with the local club and help out when/where I can. I've told myself with the move and house buying that I'm gonna take the year off from motorsport for the most part, but we'll see how that plays out. Do you guys meet socially at all? Are there club meetings beyond the events?

Hopefully no one knows me or of me, I'm trying to escape that reputation and leave that behind me, I've turned a new leaf, I swear...

Welcome, Les!

A group of us usually get together for dinner after autocross events. In St. Pete, it's usually at Beef O'Brady's just north of the site on US-19. From Brooksville, we go south to Hungry Harry's BBQ on US-41 in Land O' Lakes.

Aside from that, many of us are Miata guys, and invite FAST members to crash our Monday meeting at Rumba Island on SR-60 in Clearwater. A few show up every now and then. I think our only regular "non-Miata guy" is Steve Seiter. But, you're always welcome. Sounds like it's in your neck of the woods.

But significantly, Tim is an ex-C4 Corvette guy, and Rob is still tinkering with orphan '90s Mustangs. Les will fit right in.

I was referring to the Monday Meeting folks. Mostly Miata guys because it started out as (and still primarily is) a casual weekly "Miata club" meeting.

FAST as a whole is a pretty healthy mix of all sorts of car guys!

Maybe I'm misinterpreting your response, but I am a "Miata guy" I've had a Miata in my driveway for nearly a decade. Hell, in many ways I'd say the Miata is the greatest car ever made, I just wish Mazda had given us one with 250 or so horsepower from the factory. My old NA was great with the supercharger setup, but the driveability of my setup was unbearable in a daily driver. The new NC is actually powerful enough to be pretty entertaining, particularly in a daily driver.

What time is this Monday meeting at Rumba Island? I'll drive my Miata so I will fit in. :) Though I'm actually gonna be back in NC the next couple of Mondays.

Lunch is one of my strong suits as well, we could probably put on one hell of a lunch. :)

Brooksville is an airport site right? I'm pretty familiar with airport sites, though I have to admit, course design has never really been my strong suit.

No, you didn't. Jamie did. He thought I was talking about FAST being mostly "Miata guys", and started throwing out names of guys who don't fit that profile. I was talking about the Monday meeting... none of the guys he mentioned show up there!

I did pick up your Miata-guyness. Hope to see you on a Monday.

People start rolling in around 6pm. It's very informal. We're usually there until at least 8:30-9... sometimes 10-10:30.

Here's the local Miata forum: http://tampabaymiatas.net

Actually, I was picking up on his listing a C4 Corvette as his autocross car (Tim will be in withdrawl...), and a '94 Mustang as a track rat (Rob and Ed will add him to the wheel rotation...).

Hey! I resemble that! I love Miatas, even though they regularly whup my butt at autocrosses. However, MX-3s are warm in the winter cool in the summer, and keep the rain off as long as you roll the windows up. Come see us on Mondays, even though it's not a 'pure' Miata gathering. I think there's still room to register for the March autocross, too.

Meant to post in here earlier, I've had a busy couple weeks. I plan to make this meeting today, how will I know the group?

BTW, if you don't mind hanging out with (more) Miata guys, you may want to go here: http://www.tampabaymiatas.net

They're having a meeting over in Tampa on Wednesday night. I think they're down to "every other week", but this will be at a favorite location, so should be plenty of people there.
