March 29, 2014 - FAST Classic at Brooksville

Postby Loren » Thu Mar 06, 2014 3:17 pm

These FAST Classic events are morphing into some pretty cool stuff. At the last one, we did a "short course" (that ended up not being all that short somehow), and a practice skidpad. And we learned a little about how NOT to organize that arrangement, so this time will be even better!

What are we doing this time? A similar setup, but with a practice slalom rather than a skidpad. So, if you're looking to hone your slalom skills, this could be the event for you!

This will be a casual, no-points, no-stress, no-novices (for the purposes of THIS events, the cut-off for "novice" is 4 events) event, just straight up autocross and lost of it! Just like the old days of FAST. The entry fee is more than our regular events (but, still on par with what you'd pay to run with most other clubs), and since entry is limited to no more than 60 drivers, and with less time devoted to driver's meeting and novice instruction, there will be more runs. (we try to do 8 or more) And did we mention the World Famous FAST Lunch?

Note that the 4-event requirement will increase to 5 events for the next event to match our standard definition of "novice", which is a minimum of 5 events. But, for now, 4 events will qualify you for this event.

This will be a 3-run-group event. If the driver count is low enough (around 45 or less), we may do what we did last time and just allow drivers to take their runs whenever they want when they are not working course. If we get close to filling the event, we'll need to stick with "formal" run groups to avoid the chaos of having 40 cars on grid at once.

Entry is limited to a maximum of 60 drivers. Registration is open NOW and closes March 20.

Details & Registration here.

Congrats on the baby! (condolences on the loss of your freedom)

Okay, here's the course. Decided to have a little fun with some "optional" narrow gates. What we did was split some wide gates with a cone in the middle, and that cone will be offset to one side. It will be wide enough for any car that is registered for the event to get through, you just have to be confident in your ability to get close to an apex. (if you miss the apex by a lot, you'll run over the cone on the other side!) And, since it's a fun event, if you don't want to thread that needle, you can take the wide side and not worry about it.

If you can get through all the narrow gates does that activate the multi-ball play ?

Don't get me started. I've been trying to come up with a way to do a "Plinko" course for years!

Good thing I got some new tires. I'm going to try to "better myself" and thread the needle through those narrow gates :buck: :snicker:

Mirrors won't be the problem, he just needs to hit that practice slalom hard and figure out exactly where the tires are!

I just checked. They do! But like Loren said, I'll be hitting the practice slalom hard learning the new shoes. BFGoodrich Rivals. I've heard nothing but good things about them.

My Toyos are at the wearbars.
I really liked them, but I'm gonna try the Rivals next, too. Soon, I suppose!

I may try to just roll on the all seasons, Not sure if my spare GTI wheels would clear the fenders.

If your mirrors can hit the cones, then you have more to worry about than your driving. :-D

So, how optional are the 3 green cone gates? If you go left on the first 2 and then right on the 3rd are you still on course?

The gate is defined by the green cones. The orange cone in the middle is just a cone you need to avoid.
