January 2nd Classic, Post event.

Postby Lava Speed 05 » Sat Jan 02, 2016 7:34 pm

First off, I want to thank Doug for the co drive. I never drove a BRZ/FRS before today and I realized riding along with Doug that I have never even ridden in one. It's a great car with good linear power delivery compared to mine making it a blast to drive.

It was a very fun course, it could be very frustrating if you went into certain sections too hot, but set up was rewarded for sure.

Obviously Elliot got his "L's" worth once again.

Glad he realized I pulled a plug wire on him last month.

He ripped Ken a new one!!

Well, I never quite got it down and ended up right outside the minute mark which was frustrating. Still, I had a great time and appreciated the challenge. enjoyed hanging out with you guys and thanks to the man with the m roadster for the ride.

The course was excellent, and a big thanks to Ron for letting me drive his car. It really showed me I still have a lot to learn. Still a fun and scary day for me. It was great seeing everyone again, classic events always feel like a party to me.

So this explains why Philip didn't get his "L's" worth but still finished 4th OA ahead of Drew. Just behind Joe who had FTD until "later". Joe B was 5th so that means he didn't hit anything and stayed on the concrete.

If you finished behind the Fastiva #10 you have to do a lot of Rosary Beads.

That is my worst nightmare even with hard tires.

Pretty great day of autocross, I'd say! 6 runs on a really cool ~60-65 second course. Killer sandwiches from Masaryktown Cafe. Comfortably cool weather. Great people!

Of course, my day was punctuated by knowing that the FASTiva's engine is on its way out. (Fastest runs for Ben and I were actually in Dan's 2013 MX-5... didn't change the finish order of our class, so we left them in... Only my first run was in our car, Ben did his first 3.) We parked the car to ensure that it would get home under its own power after just a few runs.

If that wasn't enough, my truck crapped out before I even got out the gate! Mysteriously popped 3 fuses for no apparent reason. Not sure what's up with that. But, thanks to Dan, Ron and Philip for keeping me company while I waited for a tow. And thanks to Philip for giving me a ride.

Anyhow, event results are up. Where's the photos? Where's the vids? Where's the excuses?

The FASTiva was no slouch today, but our best time was only 62.168 on my first run. (about 24th overall)There was more, but I wasn't chasing it at the expense of throwing a rod through the side of the block.

My best time was my first run in Dan's car. Somehow squeaked out a 57.7 that would have been good for 3rd overall, but hit a cone. After that, I pushed harder and sucked more.

The Force was with you... just pulled video thinking it was the run, ah - it's a later run.

So today I placed behnd the sparkle powered fastiva, that kinda summed up my all-dirty-all-day driving. On the upside, I did actually remember to hug the finish cone on exit... so I have that tidbit going.

Great, challenging :bangwall: course!

Looks like Elliot called that one, Mike!

Cheap clutch? Too much power? Or just a fluke?

Most importantly, that if you're going to beat the car owner, at least try to make it look close, rather than completely humiliating him....

As y'all know, we're in a research phase for an upcoming exhaust noise rule. Kinda wanna keep you in the loop a bit so that nobody is surprised.

Today's stats:
45 drivers
3 drivers at 95-96 (Frohnerath, Azeri, Taunton) - Unquestionably loud.
2 drivers at 93-95 (Brannon, Graham) - Pretty loud.
6 drivers at 90-93 - Sporty.
17 drivers 85-90 - Typical stock exhaust.
17 drivers 75-85 - A car started?

My ear tells me that 95 is very clearly "loud", this is the maximum that our rule could be. 94 is also pretty loud, and I could see us putting the limit there pending further research. 93 isn't exactly "quiet", but it's far from obnoxiously loud. (remember, the scale is logarithmic, not linear... big difference between 93 and 94)

We're still collecting data. And thanks to the people who have already been proactive in reducing the noise level of their cars!

I hope my integra is on the 85-90 range lol, although some stock hondas seem to get stupid loud the intakes are open...The gti when i autox it the tires are louder than the exhaust ha.

Anyways here is my fastest run from today, I left a lot of time and should have carried more speed in some sections, watching a previous run, I was faster in some sections, but slower in others where I made stupid mistakes like hit cones or ended the slalom wrong. Pleased with the grip level from the kumhos so far. Went with more aggressive pads earlier too and didnt realize I had a lot more initial bite which I like.

This was definitely one of my favorite courses, too. Thanks to everyone for a great day of FAST autocross.
I wasn't expecting to be one of the loudest, but I'm also not surprised, given the girl's setup. Not straight piped, but probably sounds close at WOT.

Thought I'd try an in-car view for this event, so here's my "eff it" run - and funny enough, my fastest. Lots of room for improvement...

Unfortunately for me, I've got a herniated disk in my back (the old man one) and driving turned out to be pretty painful. I'll be working to get well and look forward to running with you all again hopefully soon.

Well that sure was a great day’s autocrossing. First, thanks to Philip for letting me drive the Miata for this event. It was really fun to drive a completely different car to the 3. Now I understand the reason these cars are so commonly campaigned in autocross. It was a real eye opener to how fast they can handle the twisty bits! Looking at Philip’s pictures, it sure does have some body roll! but in the heat of the moment and focusing on driving, I didn’t notice it much from behind the wheel.

The long course was a lot of fun, I really enjoyed the run out to the turn around with the sweeping cross-overs.

Thanks again to everyone involved in keeping the event running smoothly and on time – And to Dan for the excellent lunch!

I checked my calendar last night and I'm somehow going to figure out a way to get to the next event on Jan 16th. I wasn't planning on it yesterday, but if not, I will be out of action until Feb 28th and I can't wait that long

Well, I'm glad Philip (and Loren and Drew) had a good time in my car.

I'm blaming my craptastic performance on the sinus infection that made it feel like stuffing a jack-o-lantern into a plastic easter-egg every time I put on my helmet. That combined with DayQuil made focusing a little harder than normal. I couldn't stop whacking the damn cones.

I guess I'll look forward to a clearer head for the 16th.
