I'll go ahead and start this off. Was a bad day for me. I could not figure out why my car was so loose and I was 2 seconds or more slower than other people. Then I noticed my right rear tire did not look right. So I got a tire gauge and checked, it was hot and only showed 6 lbs of air. I was lucky that I did not roll it off the rim. So after airing it up and getting a test run in I had one run left to get it done and I over drove the finish and coned it. Oh well, it did not take to much talking to get Cheryl to approve of a new pair of tires for the rear, the fronts are fairly new. I checked the date code on those rear tires and they are from June 2010. More than 6 years old.

Yep great course today lots of fun, wish I had done better though, just need more practice, there's always next time :) Had a new set of tires, kept taking out air but never quite got them right, I'll have them dialed in next time for sure ;)

Results are up! Huge thanks to all the folks who stuck around to help pack up in the miserable heat!

Glad to back with the FAST Faithful for another season of hot autocross fun! May it not be as hot as it was today for a while, sheesh! Thanks, gang, for the "give it away now" 4th place t-shirt. Funny buggers, aren't you?

As I stand chest deep in the pool and write this recap, I have to say, it was just plain old stupid HOT out there today. I seriously wished for the first time ever that I had run in the morning. Another 30 minutes in the pool with a tall ice cold beverage and I'm sure it'll all be better.

Congratulations to Dan for keeping up the FAST tradition of beating a someone in their own car. Well done sir, and well deserved! And don't think I won't be gunning for you, Les. In the grand scheme of things, who knew .02 seconds (about 9") could be so important? Oh well.

Thanks to all the people who helped out today. They really stepped up in some rough conditions. Did I mention it was HOT?!?!?

See everyone in a few weeks!

Now where did that cabana girl go? I need a refill...

Wow, it was hot! I'm really glad I was signed up for the morning, the afternoon must have been brutal!

I get the dumb*ss award for today. Did 5 runs and never realized I was knocking over the cone at the start! Lucky that Ken was out of town, so still got a sticker. Would have been happier if my 51.009 was clean...

Here's my best run. Not smooth, but starting to learn the new car (second event).

Okay, math of the day:

I keep throwing around "54-56 mph" as the likely top speed of the FASTiva in 2nd gear. (and I think it's only been shifted to 3rd at one autocross ever... and I think it was a BMW club event!) On my drive home, I decided to get all scientific and find out what it actually is. By the speedometer, there is a PRONOUNCED drop in power at 55 mph. (which is why we never hit the rev limiter, the car tells you it's done before then) The actual rev limit? 56 mph. Then I pulled out the phone and GPS-verified the speed. 50 mph on the speedo is actually 52.

So, the actual top speed of the FASTiva (in its current configuration) is 57-58 mph. Today, I never experienced the rev limit or even the power dip... safe to say I didn't exceed 56 mph.

The point? Eh, I don't really have one. Just that top speed is not always the best indicator of a fast autocross run. The old Miata mantra is true: "It's not how fast you go; it's how little you slow down."

Yep, it was just too hot out.

I loved the course, it was a nice mix of elements to really test my new shocks out. Once I realized that I can't drive the car like I did before I loved them.

This was my last and best run of the day ( 50.372 - clean ), My wallet broke free and decided to make it rain for that run. I actually did hit the rev limiter in my car for the last run so I guess I did get a good exit for the straight.

Philip made it rain for the course workers. I touched Philip with my ET finger in the hopes that I could heal my driving. Very impressive young man. Too bad he cannot earn a living doing this autocross thing. He might win some tires tho'? Watch him over the years.

5th fastest out of 87 drivers is pretty darned fast.

Good to see all you guys again, it reminded me of a family reunion minus the cousin that likes to carry a hunting knife. Drew, Ron, Ben, Joe, Loren, Joe, Eva, Doug, Jamie, Rob, Soraya, and the others, you are a great bunch! Wish I could've stuck around and caught up with the rest of the awesome bunch. It was almost a year to the day that I enjoyed flogging the Nissan at a FAST event, and I had a great time as usual. It was nice to come home and not have something to repair on the Nissan for a change, I got the itch back, so I will be around soon to see everyone I missed today.

If I only had 6 or 7 more runs (ha), I might have figured out how to drive well enough to beat Steve. 8-) Thanks to Loren bumping himself to M3 I finished pretty well in M4. Took me a few runs to remember to relax and slow down, but it still wasn't enough to get my mind straight, and to remember to turn the A/C off.

See you guys soon. :)

Originally I was signed up in the morning. Didn't work out for me so ran in the afternoon with a different car. Advantage? After 2nd run knew I had first locked up as Gerry was on factory tires and "out of gas with full tread marvels" so slacked off being the "what if I did this" moron. I was sort of shocked that S2 ended up being the "retiree" class with Eva and Doug making it a 3 way. Amazing. Gerry will be back with better tires next time so be warned. He was only 0.4 sec off the pace with shitty tires. Of course my tires are going on 4 years old so maybe it's not such a big deal.

I was totally impressed with the Nexten bunch and see no reason why I wouldn't get those "FAST spec" next'n'line tires for my Vette. Save $120 and win over RS-3's. DOH.

Thanks to Brian, Dan and Ron for their input on those new CHEAP Nexen Drifter tires. Especially since the Maxxis won't fit my car. Granted I don't really know how fast they are since I didn't bring my normal car on toyo T1's. If you have the cash do RE-71's. If you like to still be competitive and have to take your wife to Europe once or twice a year buy the CHEAP tires. You'll never get lucky with expensive tires. Getting lucky requires a lot of planning. The pound and euro are way lower now. Go to Europe. Get lucky.

I think thats one of the funniest Autocross videos I've ever seen. I think my mentality would've been to start panicking and try to pick up some money with one hand and steer with the other.

WHAT in the hell happened to Joe Vance? Too many Realota competitions? I saw he left earlier than the rest of you. Has to be some really bad news there!!

At least he drove it home. I've had better results than that and gone home on a AAA hook.

Joe said he was feeling a heat-induced migraine before he even started his runs. After three DNF's he called it quits. :-(

Thanks. He had me worried. A couple racing guys get those and my wife too. Nasty business. Reminds me of when dumbass me sprayed him with water to cool him off out of my tire bottle and nearly burned his neck. Never occurred to me just how hot that water gets sitting in the St Pete sun. Never did that again.

I can't speak for the other guys, but yeah, those Nexens were pretty good on their maiden flight. You know you have a good tire when you think about all mistakes you made on the first couple runs, and you don't blame the tires.
