The math is really interesting on this one...

0.081 seconds at 60mph is about 7 feet.

I used 3rd gear to get to around 65mph.

You stayed in second which is about 64mph for an NA8.

1mph difference is about 1.4 feet per second.

How long do you think you were on your limiter during your fastest run?

:)
My fastest run holding second was 33.328 on the limiter about 3 seconds according to my video. The 32.942 was done with 3rd gear. Still we might not have been as close as M1 but based on that math if Jamie had grabbed 3rd it would have been interesting. I'll admit the lost was heartbreaking but man I can't wait for the rest of the season, great competition, it's going to be close! :headbang:

There are certain people who can be beaten by getting into their head. I'll leave it as an exercise to the reader to determine who those people are.

(there are also certain people who are good at GETTING INTO people's heads... :snicker: )
I would never try to get into Philip's head... For one thing I have no idea what's IN there. Second, it will probably just motivate him to drive better and improve his car which will not be good news for anyone in S4...
Don't worry, I'm already motivated to drive better!

I'm looking into what I need to make my car a torsen car and see if the cost to make it an SCCA legal torsen. So far it looks like getting an NB now is much cheaper than that option.

Anyway, my second best run:

In the turnaround you can hear me trying to feather the throttle so I don't just spin the rear wheel. Also if you listen closely you can hear my valve seals crying when I bounce off the limiter.

From everything I have seen they seem like a great tire. You will need an AutoX tire if you want to be competitive in M2 ( unless you're David Lineberry ) but I would like to add that the longer you run on inferior tires the faster you will become. Nothing hides mistakes better than a good set of tires.

Yeah, then you're definitely M2. I got bumped from M3 to M2 for stuff along the same lines. Some good competition.

So talk about holding second or shifting to third.. Nearly every car on proper tires should have shifted to third. (Maybe the ap1s2000s not). But I was into third 200 ft after the start.. My 31.9 was holding 2nd. I knew then.. It's not getting any faster unless I go to third. Picked up half second on the last three runs. - still have to watch the video for all the details

That track setup was something special yesterday. I'm all in for more track setups like that. It was 5 runs of pure excitement, I had a blast!

I shifted to third....very late...on my first run. All runs after that, I went to third on the way into the walloms. The turn-around was a technical challenge for the line alone, but my inability to stay above 30mph or efficiently rev-match and shift down to 1st hurt a bit. I tried one time, failed miserably, and just dealt with the torque dip in 2nd gear for all runs after after that.

My data logger suggests that a proper shift to first in the turn-around would have been faster, but I just couldn't manage it.

I started in 2nd and never left. Rev limiter hits around 72, my GPS speedometer clocked me at 64 on the way out. Great course and felt insanely fast on the first leg. Surprisingly we've had a Brooksville course not too long ago that had me at 74 once, this course still felt faster. According to Philip my improvement area was on the return, but what does that guy know! :|

All you need is the differential. A 4.1:1 Torsen for your car should be around $500-700. You might be able to knock some off that if you just find the guts; the case is the same as the one you have. Plus another $350 if you want someone to install it.

I've found that locally, at least, NBs with Torsens are not particularly cheap. And the ones I looked at seemed unloved.

Oh, damn, yes. I was on the limiter for about 6 seconds, by my estimate. I know better....

My 4th run -- the last one was a half-second faster because I didn't bobble the last switchback before the finish, but the video's better on this. Sat on the limiter an equally long time in both. One only wonders what it could have been....

Of course we care!

Here's what I see in your video: You're still driving like a "muscle car driver". Mash the gas, feel the acceleration! Whoa! There's a turn! Back off! Mash the gas again.

Watch your video. Watch Philip's video. Watch Jason's video. See what you're doing wrong?

I know your car is FAST. I know your car isn't the best handling car. But, on THIS course, you should have been accelerating 100% from the start all the way to the green gate. (and if you were on the right line, you were on it past there, all the way to the green apex, where you would brake hard and straight toward the end of the outside cone wall) Then, after the turn around, 100% acceleration until the Chicago box. Tap the brake, in and out... back on the gas before you hit the apex, and 100% throttle through the finish. Certain parts of that (especially the finish part) might have been DIFFICULT, but not impossible. You were simply giving up a lot of acceleration, and thus a lot of speed. And you were far from the only one doing it!

This course didn't demand a lot of cornering grip most of the time. (3rd gear sweeper, turn-around, Chicago box and finish sequence... the rest was cake) What it did demand was commitment to a really good driving line, and the balls to stay in the gas.

Compare the turnaround from our two videos. I think you gave up a bit running wide there. (I would be happy to give rides etc next event as well)

Your route through that turn around was definitely a lot smoother. I tried taking a more inside approach on one of my earlier runs, with my stock tires I'd have to scrub a lot of speed in order to make that happen, they just don't have the grip.

I'm checking on local prices for those Nexen SUR4's. I'll have a new set of tires before the next event! ;)

I tried giving a bit more acceleration through the start where it had the long left right left into that turn around. But on the first left, I had more speed through it but, I would have to completely let off because I did not have enough grip to get past the right hander after the first left(lost a nice chunk of time on a run due to that). When you say accelerating 100% do you mean having partial throttle or full throttle through initial half before the turn around or full throttle? I can see having some more partial throttle through these areas and even more throttle if I had 200 tread tires. I appreciate the feedback and I do see places where I could've braked a little less or accelerated earlier.

I think I need a veteran to drive my car next time to show me the ways. Any volunteers for the Dec 3rd event in the morning? Only rule is no launching :snore:

Maybe some of the fast guys can chime in here. But, the folks I talked to who were fast all seemed to be saying the same thing. Even Joe Brannon. "I was flat out all the way to the turn-around". I'm going to guess that trying to be flat-out spooked you and made you jerky with your inputs... and that's what caused your car to get squirrely.

Definitely a challenging course.

I'd be happy to drive your car for a run or two sometime. But, I don't know if I'm the best choice. Heavy turbo cars are not my forte.
