Needing tires.

Does anybody know a place in Tampa or St. Petersburg with good prices on racing tires/slicks? 17's, or 18's, or if there is a particular brand I should be buying for my STi, Thanks

You didn't ask for my opinion, you asked for race tire sources... but are you sure you want to do that?

If you're new to your car, building up to pushing it to its limits, and new to autocrossing, I would highly recommend sticking with good Max or Extreme Performance street tires.

I'll chime in and agree with both Kickslop and Pilgrim.

and add that don't forget if you go Edgeracing they are in FL and you will still have to pay sales tax.

-otherwise, I'm afraid I don't know of a good local source for race tires. PM Dan Rasp - he has a connection to a mobile tire source - don't recall the name, but he might be able to get the tires you want - maybe price match or something.

Truthfully, I made the mistake of #1, getting rid of the factory tires when I replaced them,#2 also making the maistake of buying tires w/ a treadwear of 300. Is there a tire out that is eqivalent to the Bridgestones that come on the vehicle. If not, for now, I will probably go w/ the factory tire, it seems to grip nite-and-day better than these Michelin pilots. After this past weekend, I realized what lack of grip I do have w/ these tires. Manhandling the car through the figure 8's definately didn't help either (taking it in stride). For some reason I was nervous out there initially, but at the end of the day I felt much more comfortable. Thanks Kenny for riding w/ me and giving me some tips. Everybody seems to be very knowledgable about things and if not, willing to help out as much as they can. I appreciate that and will take the advice and try to improve upon it. As for the tires, I will try w/ performance tires first, and then maybe step-up to the slicks,etc. Appreciate your posts Ross

Falken RT-615 : I run these right now and think they're great. I came from RE070s which I also thought were great.

Hankook Rs2 Z212 : Never tried them, but a lot of autocrossers seem to like them.

I"m running the RE-01R's now. They are pricey but seem to perform on par with the RE070's without all of the noise you get daily driving on the RE070's

I like Kumho MX. Only bad thing is they have weak sidewalls.

Tires
At this point, we’ve found the Falken Azenis RT-615 to be the best available tire in either the 205/40-16 or 205/50-15 sizes. Each has pros/cons, with the 16 accelerating and slaloming better, and the 15 being better in sweepers and keeping the motor off the rev-limiter. The Kumho MX in the 15” is also good, especially in warmer climates since that tire actually likes excessive heat build-up! Finally, the Hankook 225/45-15 is another great alternative. All of these tires are a bit squirmy when run full-tread which is fine for regional competition. For more serious efforts, consider shaving to 4/32nds.

I definitely liked the switch from Azenis to MX's. It's nice to have your tires perform their best on your last run as opposed to your first run.

That describes the z212, in my experience. They need a run or two to heat up and get traction, but then they're pretty good.

Others, needless to say, have a lot more experience than I, and have said to me, among other things, that the 615 is better than the z212. I'll be finding out myself soon as I wear out the 'kooks. 8)

What's better the RE-070 or the RE-O1R'S?

Is there a particular place, forumn, magazine, etc. that I may find useful in selling the tires I just bought for my STi. They are Michelin Pilot's 225/45ZR 17'S, W/ A 300 OR SO TREADWEAR AND ABOUT 90%TREAD LEFT. They have road hazzard warranties as well. If anybody has any advice out there it is greatly appreciated!

Expect to take a serious hit off-loading used tires though.

I've only autoX'd once on my RE-01R's compared to the RE070's but I'd say the grip is about the same. Daily driving on RE-01R's is MUCH more plesant. The tread design looks like they would fair better in the rain and they are MUCH quieter in the dry. They don't have any of the constant roar that comes from the RE070's.

I wanted something that was at least the same traction as the RE-070's. I figured I would take a big hit selling the used tires, but that's the way it goes. Do you happen to happen to know the offset of an STi rim. I'm a little confused, is it 48 mm or what? Does anybody know the owner of the Legacy 2.5 2005 that was out at the first event. He mentioned a good person to go for tuning my COBB Accessport V2 on my 2005 STi. I believe his name is Dave, but do not know the best way to contact him.
