Engine Install - Sunday Nov 11
Should have everything in order by then, gonna go ahead and claim the date!
8:30am seemed to work well last time, so we'll do that again. 8:30am - 4:00pm or thereabouts. This is in my garage in Safety Harbor. Primary goal is to get the "heavy lifting" done. As long as we get the engine bolted into the car, I can work the rest of it by myself if I have to. Of course, if it all comes together and we get everything done on this date, that's good, too!
Let me know if you're coming, and PM if you need the address. You're welcome to come hang out, watch & learn, heckle, whatever.

This should go pretty easily.
New engine should be here either tomorrow or Friday.
New clutch is on the way from Amazon.
Oil filter is here, oil on the way (yes, I ordered oil from Amazon, I'm lazy)
Flywheel is at a machine shop.
Transmission oil (fresh MTL) was saved to go back in.
Coolant (lifetime blue stuff) was saved to go back in.
Reusing exhaust manifold gasket.
Intake manifold uses rubber o-rings.
I can't think of anything else we're going to need.
Sometime before this, I'll source a small motorcycle battery and build a bracket to hold it.
It's all nuts and bolts from there.

I still cannot believe that engine only weighs 123lbs. No need for an engine puller unless it's called Tim?

With the transmission, it's getting close to 200#. We could probably get by without the lift if if Ron was around.

Engine is here. Flywheel is at the machine shop, ETA Friday. If we REALLY wanted to, assuming the FW is done, we could drop the engine in on 11/4. But, Cathy already has afternoon plans for me that day.
However, I probably will do a bunch of "engine prep" that morning. Get things as ready as I can to just drop in. If anyone wants to come by on 11/4 in the morning and help with that, feel free.
I also have Thursday and Friday (11/1 & 11/2) off if anyone is bored. I might do some stuff on the car with all that time off. I've got brakes to swap, a battery bracket to build, could probably stand to clean some stuff. Maybe organize the garage a little. (naaaaaah)

And there is a chance I may be available. It's been too long since I hung out getting dirt under my nails in your garage.Loren wrote:With the transmission, it's getting close to 200#. We could probably get by without the lift if if Ron was around.

Well, I know Dan B will be there. Now Ron. It's starting to sound like a party!
The flywheel is done. I'll pick it up sometime next week. Everything else is here. Dan and I will prep the engine this Sunday. Should be a pretty easy install.

Two hours well spent this morning in the company of Dan and Mike. We've got the engine totally prepped to go in. If we had the flywheel, we could have actually dropped it in today and been done before lunch!
But, it was nice to be able to take our time, go over things carefully, clean things, etc.
I'll pick up the flywheel probably Monday or Tuesday, it's ready. And next Sunday should be an easy engine install!

Got the flywheel.
Looked up torque specs and lubricants/sealants in the factory manual. They call for some special scarcely available red Loctite for the Flywheel Bolts. (Loctite 7201) After much hemming and hawing, I decided to just use blue Loctite, and ordered some of the more oil tolerant Loctite 743.
I may go ahead and install the flywheel Friday just so the Loctite will be fully cured before the engine runs.
I also played with the front brakes today. Finishing that up will be a 10-minute job. And I've decided to go ahead and do the rear brakes. That shouldn't take long, either, once I have the shoes.
We're still on-track for Sunday's install.

I too did just blue loctite for my Mitsubishi flywheel. You use any on pressure plate bolts?

If I'm using blue, yeah, I'll usually put a little on the PP bolts. Stuff like that you really don't want to worry about coming apart!

I always use a torque wrench on stuff like that, too.

I did as well but since I has the pp bolts already on, I didn't want to take em on and off so I just clicked em an extra 10.
I did have problems trying to torque the flywheel pressure plate bolts. But the engine moved waaaaay too much since it only had 1 motor mount and jack holding the engine up. So I torque gunned it. Maybe there is a better way so I could actually use a torque wrench, but I didn't know it at the time since first time doing all that.

Usually, wedging a screwdriver or pry bar in the flywheel teeth is a good way to hold it while you torque the bolts.

I just watched Ant of Wheeler Dealers put a clutch in a Z06 and that's what he did. Put in one bolt to use as a fulcrum point. Slick one man torque op to keep engine from spinning. Also allowed him to rotate the flywheel to access each bolt. BTW, Loren the worn clutch disk he showed looked just like yours with worm holes. He said it was because it was somewhat abused and that is caused by the glue breaking down that holds the friction material.Loren wrote:Usually, wedging a screwdriver or pry bar in the flywheel teeth is a good way to hold it while you torque the bolts.

No pressure, but I now have a driving lesson on Monday with a kid who wants to learn to drive a manual transmission. Gotta have the Mirage for that one!
I know Dan's gonna be there Sunday. Anybody else coming? Cathy wants to know what to bake tomorrow.
