The Pre-Valentine's Day Massacre Results 2/9

Postby twistedwankel » Sat Feb 09, 2019 6:34 pm

Loren named these results pretty accurately. There were a number of surprises today.
The results have been posted since about 5:45pm which once again when you have Loren and the big guy great things happen.

To me the shocker was Philip in a borrowed car taking FTD and dismantling all of M2. Very impressive for Nate's car setup skills. Philip was the first to give him credit for his setup allowing him to take all the names. It's been along time since a Mustang finished 1st in M2. :thumbwink:

I really enjoyed the course and was able to pretty much dial in my new tires pressures and get rid of the surface slime. I found I had to only use the brakes twice on this course for the turnaround and the finish basically. Once my tires got scrubbed in it was a lot of improvement. So tells me the low dollar tires were no disappointment. Thanks Bill.

The only surprise in S1 is I never heard of the lady who finished 5th in the AM. Quite a good driver in a Miata as it turns out. Surprise. All the rest of the ringers "rang" loud and clear.

Thanks for another great sunny, windy event.

The "Push Harder, Suck Less" philosophy explained:
Push Harder - Drive as close to the limit of your tires as possible.
Suck Less - Drive something resembling a proper racing line.

Good and bad day for me, mostly bad in terms of stats.

Bad: coned away FTD 34.5, only got one clean run which is only good for 3rd in class, very inconsistent

Good: first time in about 4 months that I set a FTD time clean or not, Matt's car was perfect, the weather was perfect, the course was perfectly suited for the car as well

Aaron did an incredible job, I didn't even realize he got those times until I went back and read the results

Phillip did that time in Nates Mustang?! Good lord

Oh yeah, the real silver lining is second place in points, didn't show up today for the first time all season and capitalize on my failure.

I would also like to give a shout out to the final heat newbies all 5 of them. Not only did all of them stay on course, listen calmly, improve times but were pleasant to talk to. Special thanks for the instructor run in the ST which truly amazed me with it's handling and ability to rear slide a FWD turbo car. I am in awe of the Mazdaspeed with 100HP more than my Vette running thru the front wheels. A beast. Well driven too I might add as he's only new to autocross not the tracks.

This next generation of FAST has a lot of potential.

That slalom at the end really got me. After talking with Kyle about it, I should have kept it in 3rd the whole way vs losing time down shifting in the middle of it, I know slaloms like this is a big weakness of mine, between slowing down too much and trying to downshift. I need more practice on it, as it put me in that no man's land of gearing and not following tod byram's advice of just keeping it in 3rd. :bangwall:

Nice driving, Philip! I knew Nate's car was capable of putting down a good time, but I didn't know if you would adapt quick enough to it.

I didn't notice that Jason slipped passed me in the morning so I was thinking I was in third, not fourth... Finishing fifth after Philip got the pony bug. [emoji1787][emoji24]

Nate was listing off to Philip everything he's done to that car... He's put a lot of love and money into it.

See what happens when I don't show up? FREAKIN' CHAOS!!!

My clutch finally decided that it just didn't want to let go of the flywheel. Their bond is strong. :lust:
Unfortunately, I really need them to accept the fact that they need some alone time.
Seems a teardown is in order, so Bewsted is out of commission for a bit, again. :bangwall:

I don't know how all that junk in the results happened, but looks like it was fun to watch.

That is known as an ass pucker. It's probably been parked next to your ole Mustang at some point. What ever happened to the no paint limb catcher?

I was able to beat a nice handful of people that I've never beaten before. The number one person I would like to beat at least once is Mark H. I was 0.011 away from his time.... I would've LOVED :rolling: to get that off my checklist. Anywho, car felt great, course felt great, weather was great, FTD battle between Aaron and Phillip was great. Overall great day!

Here is my fastest run, 35.256 clean.

Today was awesome!
Couldn't ask for better weather, and cooler peeps. The two guys I worked tech with, Mike and Wayne were funny as hell, making that assignment entertaining.

Then Philip... man oh man, that dude can drive! It is really good to see rusty place where it did, and my suspicions/beliefs confirmed. The car just earned itself a full paint job lol

So yeah, reach out if you need an FTD foxbody built, I'll put together a kit for the 'lo lo *FTD Driver necessary but not included. :)

I enjoy all of the foreshadowing that happened today. Nate and I discussed which would be better, beating philip, just barely losing to Philip, or getting destroyed by Philip. Nate seemed to prefer the former rather than the latter. I thought it would be good to know if the car had more on the table... Seems like there is... and it's alot.

Then had a rousing foxbody bashing session with Philip. Jokes about Porsche and BMW yearning for the fantastic handling characteristics of an old foxbody.

Then Philip crushed everyone, badly. :thumbwink:

Oh, and Aaron. Fantastic driving, sir.

This course was an absolute blast. I kept knocking off sizable chunks of time, leading me to believe my car had a more in it than I could find. But, man it was fun. Just lose enough to be a blast. Seemed faster the loser I drove it, especially on the way out.

Yes, very much so. If my rear started to slide but not enough to be off line or oversteer too much, then that's when my times were quicker.

I think Nate wins the “got 1 cone at each station” award. And the “knocked down 3 cones after a red flag “award.

The Red mist was strong trying to catch Philips times.

Dang that's jacked up. I ignored a full course red and finished a run?
