The clutch being replaced also? Looks like that throw out bearing caused some havoc in the bell housing.

The clutch disk and the important parts of the flywheel are undamaged, no problems there. The outside of the clutch cover it beat to death, but not enough to be a structural problem. I would have opted to replace it, but Soraya doesn't have the money to spend... and it's her car. We just installed a new bearing and called it good.
BONUS DAY:
Tuesday, Feb 19, we'll be back at it around 8:30-9:00 to troubleshoot the Cam Position Sensor problem and hopefully finish up, get the hood on, and clean up the garage a little.

I wondered about that too. Glad you asked. I even looked up the parts cost. Learned they have a replaceable $100 flywheel ring wearing surface with 27 (pins) - looks like you do it rivets? Which might require a special tool?CaptainSquirts wrote:The clutch being replaced also? Looks like that throw out bearing caused some havoc in the bell housing.
So other than the hassle and expense plus drilling/driving out 27 pins/rivets? I pondered why would an Excedy Clutch assy. cost over $500 with only a 3 month guarantee and a OEM clutch is about $200 with a 1 year warrantee? Anyhow thanks to you guys she got a newer engine installed for possibly less $$ than a new clutch/flywheel assy. I can certainly understand her logic there. If it ain't broke......Loren wrote:The clutch disk and the important parts of the flywheel are undamaged, no problems there. All you guys who helped her out rule.

Great work FAST crew! Pretty amazing camaraderie...
Certainly some closure on the finding out why the loss of a cylinder!

I wondered if it was a problem with the VTEC solenoid -- almost called you when I got home, but decided to eat dinner and go to bed instead.
I'd say it's connected, but more accurate to say, we plugged a connector (at the end of the same harness that connects the coil packs) into the CPS.Loren wrote:Only ONE code remains! It's the Camshaft Position Sensor code.
I can live with that. It's either not connected, a broken wire, or a bad sensor. We have a spare sensor.

Kind of funny. I pay people to lay under my cars now (or own a lift) and am able to fix the yard for exercise. Life makes weird turns. The main fix for a yard or a car is the mental ability. The rest is Hoe work. I am now a yard Hoe and the guys who work (not necessarily fix) my cars are car Hoes. Everyone is a Hoe for someone in the end.Loren wrote:Pfffth! Can I get a crew to come help renovate my yard and garden?

And to answer the 2 questions:
clutch replacement - It would make perfect sense given that the engine & tranny were out. I certainly would have if I would have been able to swing it right now. Too many expenses, necessary and additional, outside of the car's needs to do it right this moment... On Friday, when I got the news, I did the desperate math and it would have meant a long hiatus from AX to divert entry and tire money for about 7 months into payments for the new clutch assembly. Later Loren opinioned that the damage was cosmetic. I examined the flywheel and clutch assembly as well, and was satisfied with the assessment.
cylinder loss cause - I was actually able to find a very plausible explanation in the Fit Freaks forum about 2 weeks ago, when I started debating head replacement v. whole engine. He'd seen 2 other GD3s do the same and what he said made sense in light of other observations. A crisped exhaust valve was predicted and, sure enough, one was found. A bit of morbid satisfaction, finding that an understanding of materials properties, inorganic & organic chemistry, thermodynamics and voo doo finally come in handy and were not a waste of those "required courses" I had to take in college.
All things considered, replacing the engine led to the discovery of the freak throw out bearing failure and the particle in a box shenanigans.

Just a couple minutes in the morning light with a mirror and a flashlight identified the unplugged Cam Position Sensor. Plugged it in, and all is well!
Ahem... "The Fit is Go!"
And thanks for lunch, Doug!

Yes she is home and tucked in her garage. She was happy and 2nd gear chirpy on her way home
Taking a few hours to do email, catch up with messages and then later will sort out some of the extra bits I got home to catalog, store and have as spares.
Thank you all for the community effort - would have never happened without the FAST village.
And I second a thank you to The Mayor for lunch!

So is Les going to rebuild that old engine and put it in his VW FMod? That would be cool, cheap and reliable?

sounds like the shortblock is still good, just needs a new or rebuilt head.

Les will not be doing anything with a Honda anything. LOL Besides, in theory that Fit motor has less HP than the VW, it would almost certainly be more reliable though...twistedwankel wrote:So is Les going to rebuild that old engine and put it in his VW FMod? That would be cool, cheap and reliable?
