Paint Prep Tech Session - Loren's Groj - Sat, April 13

Postby Loren » Tue Apr 09, 2019 10:48 pm

Well, there's another car in the groj, and it looks like the "not a project" Project Miata is going to get painted! New guy Chris Miller was a body and paint guy in a former life, and likes a good project. He seems to think this one is pretty simple. So, rather than just paint the hardtop, we are (he is) going to paint the whole car.

This day will be the beginning of initial disassembly and prep work. We'll take apart what needs to be taken apart, scuff up what needs to be scuffed up, and take inventory of what body work needs to be done and what supplies we'll need. Who knows how far we'll get? But, we're in no big rush. As long as it's all done by about the end of July, I'm happy.

The plan is to get the car disassembled, prepped and ready for paint. Then rent a paint booth, borrow a trailer, and go paint it. :thumbwink:

WHEN: Saturday, April 13 - 9:30am-4:30pm

WHAT: Miata body work... or perhaps whatever YOU need to do as long as it's nothing major. I have plenty of driveway space, tools and knowledge. Fluid changes, brakes, other minor maintenance are all doable.

WHERE: My garage in Safety Harbor, PM me if you need the address.

WHO: Me and Chris at a minimum. Anyone else is welcome to come watch & learn, help, hang out, heckle, whatever.

There will be fresh baked cookies on-hand. And, of course, we'll always find something to do for lunch. Nutrition is important.

Please reply if you plan to attend. And if you have any work to do, that would also be good to know. 8-)

Maybe so much love it pains people to change it... I'm in for at least a couple hours, likely more.

True dat. I finished the title and tag transfer Monday!

I'm looking forward to having a new car to love. I haven't really loved a car in a few years.

Your "not a project" is going to break your heart. If you would have paid Ben more he would have painted it "lust" yellow.

Would have saved me all sorts of problems if it were yellow. I simply wouldn't have bought it. :smack:

Was very seriously considering a bike ride by the groj again tomorrow, but after a horrible week, I decided to drink beer tonight instead.
Will wake and gorge on chicken eggs and pig part patties to break nightly fast. Mebbe bagels, too.
Fare thee well groj dwellers.

Translation? Drew painted the town red tonite and won't be up in time to help with the paint job?

I would like to mosey over for an hour or two in the morning. I always enjoyed doing the minor rattle can repair jobs on my cars when I used to live in climates more conducive to rust :)
Will be fun to help out on something on a larger scale!

Please post pictures of the project. I may decide to paint my Miata at some point, and it would help to see how much you are disassembling and how you're doing your masking.

Yeah, I'll try to document the process a bit. I'm not one of those "take pictures of everything" people, but I'll definitely try to hit the different stages.

Swapping the wheels on my car and then I'll head over. I was hoping to mow the lawn this morning but it's too wet still.

I've got some photos to sort through, crop and post on Flickr. Will probably start a "paint project" thread to present it all orderly like.

But, we were successful in helping Matt get his clutch master cylinder replaced. And we had Chris and English Dan (accept no substitutes) working with me on the Miata. We made great progress getting the bumpers, side skirts, door panels, door windows, and top fully removed. And Chris dove right into starting to fill and smooth some of the minor dings and scuff the paint. :thumbwink:

We'll probably try to get back at it with another Groj Day in 2 weeks. At that time, I'd like to go ahead and roll the fenders before we get too far along with the paint work. Who's got a fender roller and can make that date? (4/27)

Otherwise, we'll press on with the body prep.

I just realized the mirror is on the passenger side still. Did you do that on purpose?

"On Purpose" by virtue of not having the correct screwdriver and not wanting to strip the screw heads. The other mirror came off easily with the "wrong" screwdriver. Need to get a big fat Phillips head for that one.
