Legit instructor run in the student's car, sure... but, if they need right-seat time in another car, the solution is to plug them in with someone who's already taking a run!
And by "people" you mean me as I believe I was the only official instructor in the 3rd heat, this is a pretty thinly veiled jab at me.
#1 I actually did ask permission before just doing it, whereas I'm pretty sure I've seen many many instructors in the past just do it (yourself included) without asking permission particularly at a "pointless" event. I guess as the old adage goes, its better to beg forgiveness than ask permission. ;-)
#2 I had already taken all my competition runs and thus this being an instructor run it wouldn't have been recorded in the results and thus would have effected things exactly nil beyond extending the end of the event by maybe 20 seconds (big effing whoop)
#3 My student had ridden with Jaime already and she was doing quite well, well enough that I definitely felt she could have benefited from a passenger seat ride along with me.
#4 I had already dropped the idea of her doing a ride along with me driving her car but she didn't bite, wasn't gonna press the issue. I prefer driving my own car anyway in general.
#5 Your argument that there were at least 30 other people who would want to do the same thing while true was mostly invalid since by being the only official instructor in the 3rd heat I was the only person in a reasonable position to make such a request.
But way to go sheriff on catching that "major BS" you surely averted total chaotic disaster and saved everybody at least 20 seconds of their day.
