Big Groj Weekend - Aug 17/18 @ Loren's

Postby Loren » Thu Aug 08, 2019 1:04 am

We got stuff to do! And if you've got stuff to do, or you just want to come hang out, you're welcome to join us!

The Miata is out of the paint booth, and needs to be ready for action by Sep 7th. I want to try to get it reassembled, and maybe even get the shocks installed this weekend. And I've got plenty of garage and driveway space for other projects. Whatcha got?

Since we'll be at it all weekend, I'm open to larger projects if you've got anything you need to do. Maaaaybe a clutch job, timing belt job, that sort of thing. Just make sure you have all of your parts together and either know what you're doing, or bring someone with you who does. I can help some, but I'll be busy doing other stuff.

Y'all know I'm all about nutrition. (I didn't say GOOD nutrition) Lunch will happen. Cathy will probably bake us some cookies, too. She's cool like that.

WHEN: Saturday, Aug 17 AND Sunday, Aug 18 - 9:30am - 4:30pm

WHAT: Miata body assembly, maybe some wet sanding, maybe suspension work... or perhaps whatever YOU need to do as long as it's nothing major. I have plenty of driveway space, tools and knowledge. Fluid changes, brakes, other minor maintenance are all doable.

WHERE: My garage in Safety Harbor, PM me if you need the address.

WHO: Me and Chris at a minimum. Anyone else is welcome to come watch & learn, help, hang out, heckle, whatever.

Please reply if you plan to attend. And if you have any work to do, that would also be good to know. 8-)

I now have in my possession 25 sheets of 1200 grit sandpaper. I can scarcely comprehend that such a thing exists, but clearly it does. And I'm going to figure out what to do with it!

I think Ken's going to loan me his buffer, too. A little 1200 grit wet sanding, a little polishing... a little reassembly... Could have the car on the road and looking spiffy in a matter of hours! Might even get the shocks swapped and be semi-ready for competition.

If Dan brings his truck, we might sand and polish his freshly painted panels, as well.

Anybody else got projects to add to the list? Or hands to lend to the effort?

Tomorrow begins the big weekend! I've been letting the car rest comfortably. Allowing the paint to cure.

Hopefully, getting things back together won't take too long, and then we can either start polishing, or start installing shocks. With two days available... maybe both? Aside from just making sure the car is drivable, I really don't have a preference at this point. I would very much like to drive it, and to be able to compete in it on 9/7, new shocks or not.

I know Dan's planning to be here tomorrow. Anybody else making an appearance?

Dan and I made some good progress today. Got the car de-taped first. Then test-buffed part of a fender just to see how well the dust imperfections from the dirty paint booth were going to come out. (The answer is, Great!) And Dan did most of the reassembly of the rear of the car (bumpers, fender liners and lights) while I reinstalled door hardware, door handles, and windows.

It's all coming together nicely, and starting to look like a car again!

Dan won't be around tomorrow. Extra hands would be welcome, still plenty to do. I'll be out there at 8:30am.

First order of business will probably be to polish the area around the door mirrors and the mirror bases. Much easier to do that before they're installed. Once the mirrors are in, I can button up the door panels.

Need to do a similar polish of the area around the hard top before the hard top goes on.

I'll be there, but 8:30 is beyond my current capabilities. I'm still soggy with rum from my weeklong bender in the Dominican.

:headbang:

BTW, I misspoke above. I'm getting out of bed at 8:30. Won't crawl out to the garage until about 9:30.

And... I'm about to order a paint gun for to handle the front bumper repaint... and various other touch-up that I haven't told Chris about yet.

The big weekend wasn't so big. Just me and Dan on Saturday, and me and Chris on Sunday. But, we got a lot done. Plenty more to do. More Saturdays in our future.

Things are coming together.
