Just a tiny bit late entering the slalom. Otherwise, really good run!

What I found helped with that slalom was to get a little more to the right BEFORE the slalom so that you could late apex the very first cone. Watch my video.

I had a great time jumping in for some passenger rides - thanks to everyone for who let me ride along, always fun to experience such a variety of different cars.

I felt like I made some pretty good progress during the day, I've managed to attend more events than usual this season and I think the seat time is starting to pay off. I had four clean runs and four with cones so at least I know I was working on the push harder side of the equation. During the day I dropped my time from a 38.2 to a 35.8. Also ended up closer than I can remember to Loren's line of shame - only .161s and two places below in the overall list. This sounds like a "suck less" result to me.

Here's my fastest time, I don't feel like I mastered my approach to the turn around in any of my runs, but otherwise pretty happy with this one.

Any feedback or words of advice are welcome.

Dan
Thanks for the rides! Watching my first run, based on the video, my only explanation on having a DNF on the run you rode with me was I may have hit that cone at the turn around :rolling:

I noticed the same thing as Loren about the slalom, you get to the right a bit more which set me up early and I was able to carry more speed through it. I noticed you were late on the slalom rides I had with you, but I couldn't pinpoint going more to the right would have set that up a lot better. It wasn't until I drove the course, I saw it.

Maybe your line around the green cone at the beginning of the turnaround could've been a little tighter. Granted, probably braking at that point, but distance is distance, and the following left may have been easier.

Dan - maybe it's just me, but it looks like you might still be doing that double-input steering thing, or something similar, just a little. Best I can see it at 35 seconds into the "box" after the slalom, you make a minute jog to the right before the big left before the finish. By no means a game-changer, but might-could be upsetting the car a touch more than necessary... maybe...

I've gotta battle for points in M4 at the Open event. I'd be down to co-drive at the Dunnellon event on the 22nd if you're going to that one.

I was unfortunately not at the event so this could all be wrong.
@00:06 - This cone looked really important to be very tight on the back side of it. Since it "pinches" the next element limiting how much speed can be carried down the longest straight on the course. A more aggressive and sooner turn in would have scrubbed a bit of speed but have set you up better on the straight.
@00:24 - Looks like you could have been tighter on the turn around. Considering that leads to the 2nd longest straight cutting distance but keeping a larger radius is very important. As to how to do that I have no clue.
@00:34 - Getting an early start to this slalom is the key to not getting late. Turn in harder and sooner like you wanted to hit the cone. Let the car "wash" or understeer a bit and it should carry just wide enough to not actually hit the cone. The reason I do this is it gets the initial upsetting of the suspension done early. When the car actually gets to the first cone the car should have settled making the next direction change less violent.

Might not be able to make it to the dunnellon event, not 100% sure yet.

@Phillip - Thanks for the input, definitely trying to practice turning early. Will get some more practice at the next event, it looks like fun!

Had a good time. The eight runs made for mucho learning. Still need to push the mustang more. Must get the idea that I drive it home out of my mind.

I will remember the event for my speed during my course work. Did not realize this old man can move so fast! Of course, having a car spinning out where I was standing one-half second before may have something to do with it.

A good idea to ALWAYS remind workers to keep eyes on the cars coming their way. things can happen fast. If I had been looking away, it would have been "hasta la vista, baby"

The words "always watch the cars on course" and "never turn your back on a car" have been a part of our driver's meeting for years.
