CDV delete

Postby DeltaNu1142 » Fri Dec 05, 2008 7:13 pm

I crawled under the car tonight & pulled out the CDV. I lost quite a bit of fluid (I used a golf tee to plug the line while it was open). Have you ever gotten brake fluid in your eyes?!? I have no doubt that stuff will remove paint.

I'm no pro at bleeding, so it took me a few tries, but after putting everything back together I went for a ride, and it definitely makes a difference... I used to have a little hangup between 1st & 2nd, and that's GONE. It shifts like buttah. The clutch is quite a bit lighter, but I don't know if that's because of the absence of that valve or because I left some bubbles in the line. Brakes are fine, and I'm well above the MIN level in the reservoir, so I'll keep driving & if I run into problems I'll bleed the clutch again...

if the clutch feels softer, more than likely there is some air in the system.
you can gravity bleed it by just filling the res and opening the bleeder till the fluid runs out clear and bubble free. then you can pump and bleed the rest. just keep toping of the resivor dont let it go down to far though.
i did this yesturday on my s 2000. my peddle feels great now.
i replaced my clutch so i changed my clutch fluid, it was nasty! i mean nasty! now its clear. 8)

Yeah, I would have done that tonight, but it was getting dark & I didn't have any DOT 4 anyway. I'm sure you're right, I'm just in denial--there's probably an inch of new slop in the pedal. I'll probably get to it on Sunday.

Pinging Clint--where do you get oil?!? Advance Auto doesn't carry Castrol 10w60.

P.S., did the ZHP knob & new boots; I love the shifter but the boots are kind of cheezy. I should have gone with OEM.

I thought only BMW dealers and/or BMW specific shops online sold that stuff as it's pretty much a E46 M3 specific oil weight to keep the motor from puking its parts all over.... I doubt any other engines in use today call for that stuff.

Clint can correct me if I am wrong.

Charles is correct - it's euro spec, ubber expensive, don't even think about using anything else, dealer only.

I've ordered stuff from Tischer before with good success: http://www.getbmwparts.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Depending on how much you are getting, it might be a lot easier just to pick it up locally...

I'm a mustang guy. so bear with me, this 10w 60 oil in th engine? or the trans?
I'm just having problems believing it goes in the engine, is it a turbo/blower application? I assume.

I'll check around for some sources if you'd like.

Definitely engine oil. The only manufacturer I know of is Castrol.

I use Redline products elsewhere (bike tranny, bike diff). I intend to use Redline in the car diff next time I change it; those have off-weights. I understand your apprehension, I had never heard of 10w60 before buying this car, but as I understand, with no exceptions, you should put no other lubricant into this engine...

Stock specs of a critical nature:
  • inline 6-cylinder, cast iron block w/aluminum head
    naturally-aspirated
    11.5:1 compression
    8,000 rpm redline
max piston speed = 24 meters/sec (number of questionable value, only as compared to F1 cars at 25 meters/sec)
Here's a link to the oil. If you can find it cheaper than $10/quart, I'll be shocked & interested.

A friend of mines cousin or brother runs that department. I have purchased a bunch of overall maintenance items from them, with much happiness and success. 20% off and cheap shipping, can't go wrong.
