Looks like fun, I like the way you diagramed the course so it corsponds to the instructions. Should make for a fun day, or long one depending on how many people can navigate it. Are suicide knobs allowed? :P

Ok, so I've been coming out for a little while now and just now decided to join the discussions (rather than being a forum "lurker" as Steve put it  ). I'd have to say that I was a bit skeptical about wanting to come to the gymkhana event (realizing it wasn't meant to necessarily appeal to the masses). After viewing the instructions and map, I'm actually quite excited and hopefully my brother will come too. Kudos to WAFlowers for taking the time to organize this and for handling all the reluctancy!

Also, my dad used to run in SCCA-sanctioned gymkhana events in the mid 60's - so I suppose this has some inherent interest for me as well. Noting the lack of safety concerns on the vintage video, he commented on their actual requirement to wear helmets and he had a five-point racing belt installed in his 1965 Corvair. General safety/tech inspections were performed as well. (He began participating about 2 yrs after that video, so maybe the safety concerns came a long way in a short time.)

Let me know what tasks/jobs are in need of filling. So far, I've only done basic course work -- don't mind doing more.

Looking forward to Oct. 6th!

SCCA didn't have a "formal" autocross program until sometime in the early 70's, and didn't have a formal "safety steward" program until I think the early 80's. So, what you had back in the 60's would depend entirely on the local club and how they chose to organize things. (much as our own independent club is now)

I know several "old timers" who saw what we were doing and said "why the hell would you want to do that?" Essentially "we did it back then, and it sucked, that's why we quit doing it". My answer is that WE weren't around back then and we HAVEN'T done it... so we want to experience it.

It's been pointed out that modern cars will probably handle this sort of stuff much better than the pre-80's vintage cars did. Transmissions shift easier and better, that kind of thing. So, who knows... maybe the time is ripe for a revival of old-school gymkhana in the US? (I think they still do it in places like Japan and England)

We'll have fun, and if people like it enough, we might try to do it again sometime.

It's worth trying. We won't know if it sucks until we try it. I think the first run group will be really busy with everyone trying to get rides.

I can't wait to give it a try. Also, it will provide many good photo opps so don't forget your camera. :D

Are we going to have those FAST stickers at this event steve? Image

I can't take much credit. Loren designed the course, although I'm pleased that 2 elements I suggested made it in.

I'm just the guy who lines up the people who will be doing the REAL work and making sure they are where they need to be, when they need to be there, and have the things they need to get the work done. Then I get out of the way and let them get it done right.

Hmmm ... kinda like my idea of the ideal project manager. :)

Yea!! Glad you came out of the shadows ...and thanks for the offer of help.

Assuming FedEx and UPS don't let us down, we will have FAST logo decals for sale ($3. each, or 2 for $5) and the award decals will be given out retroactively to the beginning of the year (Bill, plan an extra 5 min at the drivers' meeting, please). and hey, where'd you get the "poke with a stick" emoticon?

Otherwise, the insurance request is sent, and I'm still waiting to hear back from SPC about Fri. pm pad access.

Bill, that's an excellent summary of chairing an event - tell everyone how easy it is!

Finally heard back from SPC. We have permission to be there Fri PM if we want to do any setup ahead of time. After 5ish. If ya'll want to do that, someone coordinate with me key-wise, 'cause I can't be there (other than to drop off the key...)
