Daniel: Your lines were better than mine! My example was a great case of over-driving. It was great fun though-ha.
As Loren stated and we discussed on-site, I try to power thru a turn (power on before apex) or the center diff magic won't help you and the rear tires continue along for the ride. AWD drive advantage is being able to apply power far earlier than a front/rear wheel drive. The turn around for instance...power could have come much earlier on the start of the return. And your braking point was too early and next to no ABS was used on the slow down in the middle of the return side.
How many miles on the struts? As your car appears to 'flop' a bit. I recall I refreshed mine and found not only did the feel better (taut), but understeer was reduced. An alignment helped wonders too (you probably already did that). Fun means having a car that is a willing dance partner.

That's about it. You might have to make adjustments to alignment or tire pressures to make that a bit more controllable -- if it just hangs on, hangs on, and abruptly lets go, it's difficult to use it. Yes, it chews up tires, but if you rotate them front-to-back every event or every other, you can even the wear out.Loren wrote:You trail-brake into the turn hard enough to get the back end light and let it start to slide out a little. Then you hammer the throttle to shift weight to the rear and catch the slide. AWD cars should be good at it. But, it's not going to be easy on tires. Sliding = chewing up rubber.

Sounds like something to mess around with at a classic event. I always trail braked in Gran Turismo but only used it on some turn around during autocross.Jamie wrote:That's about it. Is there's a "points" discussion thread? Love the M3 and S4 battles.. some tight racing. Anyone's ball game. Looking at points leaders vs recent trend is always fun.

Another thread is fine, but we usually talk about that kind of stuff right here in the post-event threads. Why not?RedBRZ80 wrote:Is there's a "points" discussion thread? Love the M3 and S4 battles.. some tight racing. Anyone's ball game. Looking at points leaders vs recent trend is always fun.

The "Push Harder, Suck Less" philosophy explained:
Push Harder - Drive as close to the limit of your tires as possible.
Suck Less - Drive something resembling a proper racing line.

Because its a general season points chat and not necessarily specific to this, or any particular event.

Great course, just wish I had figured it out quicker. Found out I could theoretically get into the 47s and coned my last run. I was really disappointed as I felt like that was my best driving in weeks.

On the way home I thought "I bet I could have left it in first gear through that first section..." Looks like I was right, haha.

Lower the rear tire pressure by 2 psi to see if that makes it a little less "grippy" and lets it rotate a little better.
Political correctness has neutered this country.

Struts came from another evo so they have a good 11 years on them and a little over 40k miles. Also car has Swift Sport springs which are pretty good DD springs. Alignment should be near -2 on the fronts and -1 on the rear with 0 toe. It's been a while since it's been checked so probably is off a little.Tim_M wrote:How many miles on the struts? I thought decreasing psi in the rear tires make the car rotate better.jmdoc66 wrote:Lower the rear tire pressure by 2 psi to see if that makes it a little less "grippy" and lets it rotate a little better.

I think you guys are both saying the same thing.CaptainSquirts wrote:I thought decreasing psi in the rear tires make the car rotate better.jmdoc66 wrote:Lower the rear tire pressure by 2 psi to see if that makes it a little less "grippy" and lets it rotate a little better.
But, in reality, there is an "optimal" tire pressure that will give you maximum grip. Going significantly below that will cause the tire to lose grip. Going significantly ABOVE that will also cause the tire to lose grip, either due to crowning the contact patch OR due to the increase in "effective spring rate" that comes from the tire itself being stiffer.
We generally think "less pressure equals more grip". But, it really depends on where you are relative to "optimal". Personally, I just go for "close enough" and "not killing the sidewalls", and then tweak the rear pressures a little bit for balance.

Good fun as usual. Tried something different this time and ran the afternoon event instead of the morning event which I typically run. Don't know why but I couldn't get my head into it in the afternoon...
Best clean run was a 50.2, thought my fastest run of 49.9 was clean but apparently hit a cone out there somewhere. (Haven't had a chance to go through my videos yet)
One of these days I'll break into the top 5 of M2 with my fat pig.

Itty bitty car has new itty bitty alternator held on by shiny new Schwarzenegger grade bolts.
Bottom bolt (the one the alternator pivots on) was pretty chewed up and it's mounting hole on the block is a bit more than round. Not sure what to do about that. I think the lower bolt was allowing some movement of the alternator which put stress on the upper mounting bolt attached to the tensioner that was beyond the capabilities of the bolt. Then, snap.
New lower bolt has far less movement and with everything torqued down, hopefully it will stay put. Added a couple of zip ties to keep tensioner in place if the bolt breaks again. Replaced upper bolt with grade 10.9 bolt which is the metric equivalent to Grade 8. We shall see.

Can you put a stud in the lower hole so it can be threaded all the way in?AScoda wrote:Itty bitty car has new itty bitty alternator held on by shiny new Schwarzenegger grade bolts.

Missing those events in the beginning of the season is killing my chances of a T-shirt, well that and my driving... I know someone in another class needs Joe to co-drive with them. [emoji23]

Joe B destroyed SCCA B Street in my B Street car with worn 240 tires in 2016. What would he do with RE71's in 2017? Be careful what you wish for. Joe can run any car in M2....even an S2 car with a new Exedy clutch/flywheel. Drew beat you all with an old slipping clutch in the same car on the same tires not long ago in 2016.
