Heck, I was told once that if you aren't hitting cones you aren't trying hard enough. 8)

That was in the Charles-mobile, my first time not running in my own car. I wasn't quite used to the fact that when you turned the wheel, you didn't have any body roll before the car turned. And one of those runs was when I tried to drift the turnaround and broadsided the marker cones. That and I kept locking up the brakes.

Yay for a heavy clutch right next to a featherlight brake pedal

Just thought I'd drop in and say hi. Hope to make the Lakeland event in August with my 96 C4. unfortunately I'll be out of town for the St. Pete event this weekend. Gives me more time to track down a nice helmet though. Can't wait to see how this dude will handle when put through the cones.

Hope to see ya on the track soon!!!!

SWEET!!!! It's on my list of things to do anyway. Since I'll be out of town this weekend I'll have plenty of time to get a helmet for the next event in Lakeland. I can't freaking wait. 8)

Nice. I've always loved red vettes, but red just isn't me. I'm a black and yellow kinda guy. Now I just hope I still fit in my car with a helmet on. It's going to be a tight fit (I hit my head on the roof now from time to time).

Hello everyone, I just signed up for the May 17th autocross. It will be my first and I have a few questions.

I saw a post a while back that you had loaner helmets. Is that still the case? Is there a charge? If I were to buy a helmet, what specifications should I look for?

I signed up for the stock class, but there is a chance I will have coilovers installed before may 17th which I believe puts me in the modified class. Would it be a problem to change classes when I got there?

I didn't pay for a guest at signup because I am not sure if my friend will be able to make it. If they can come how is that handled? Can I just pay the extra $5 when I get there?

Any other tips a first timer should hear?

Thanks

- Josh

Hi Josh, glad to hear you're gonna be joining us! Yes, we still have loaners, new ones since that post, in fact! No charge. As for what specs to look for in a helmet, that actually depends on what club you run with. Our only requirement is DOT approval. Different clubs have different rules, and track is different than autocross. Usually, an M rating is fine - I know this topic has been discussed before, here, and certainly in the autocross forum on Tampa Racing.com http://www.tamparacing.com/forums/auto-x-road-racing/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - could always search, or just check with the individual clubs...

Not really a problem to change classes that day, but if you know ahead of time, please feel free to edit your entry on MAE.com, and send an email from there to me, steve@wedrivefast.com or to Jamie at info@wedrivefast.com and let us know - fewer last minute changes, the better...

They'll need to sign the insurance waiver when they get there, and yes, the $5 for lunch can be paid on-site

http://wedrivefast.com/NoviceTips/tabid/69/Default.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Read everything under the novice tips menu and you should be fine. If you've still got questions after that, feel free to ask!

See you there!

I have a few more questions.

This being my first event, what time should I show up?

I would love to have pictures of my runs. Is there anyone out there who takes pictures? I have a decent camera and I wouldn't mind bringing it but I know I can't keep it in the car with me while I drive. Is there a safe place to leave something like that while you drive?

Would blue painters tape on the rear side windows be okay to mark my number?

Thank you for all of your help.

Show up as early as 7, as late as registration closes at 9. Depends how much time you want to get your car set up, to help set up the course or other stuff, to walk the course once it's ready...kinda up to you. Most folks are there by 8:30 I'd say.

Often times someone is out with a camera, and sometimes the photogs post their shots online. No guarantees on that at all. You're right, you can't carry the camera in the car, nor can a passenger simply hold it. We don't promise security at the events, so unless you trust it to someone to hold it for you while you drive, it's at your own risk. To guarantee shots of your car, bring someone with you to take pix for you. FYI, we do require photogs to have a "spotter" for safety sake, but you can probably find someone to help with that by asking.

Blue tape is fine, just be sure the numbers are at least 6 inches and readable a good 100 feet away, on both sides of the car.

Howdy, all.

New to the forum, novice at autocross, hoping to get a bit more experience under my belt. I've got a '02 330i with very slight suspension mods and summer tires, otherwise all stock.

My only autocross so far has been this past June with the local chapter of BMWCCA. I wasn't very good - I'm a bit too timid, especially since I'm in my daily driver. But my times improved over the course of the day, and more importantly, I had fun.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to make the Sept 12th date, as my wife already made plans. I'll keep the rest on my calendar, though.

I'll also be doing the NASA HPDE on Oct 3 at Sebring - maybe I'll see some of you there.

Hey, Nathan. Thanks for posting. Don't worry about how good you are - like anything else, it's a matter of practice. And despite how it may seem, autocross won't hurt your car - so go for it!

Maybe we'll see you in October.

Never buff out the cone marks...badges of honor!
