I just had another idea, what if we connect the computer to a small UPS? That way if the gen could be shut off to be re-fueled, or if it ran out of gas the computer wouldn't die.

Tried that once (not with this generator). We had an old, really old, POS UPS that worked fine. But, when we tried to upgrade to a modern UPS, it tripped a ground fault on the UPS and would not work at all. Worth trying, but don't be surprised if it doesn't work.

Push Harder - Drive as close to the limit of your tires as possible.
Suck Less - Drive something resembling a proper racing line.

How about a replacement battery off eBay for the laptop? Sometimes you can get them quite cheaply.

Folks, do keep in mind that this "new" laptop that Bill has for us will be come the official timing-in-the-trailer laptop. The old one will (hopefully) become a small display to put outside for people to look at times. If it doesn't have a battery and goes out for a few minutes, who cares.

Yep (to what Kenny said). My guess is the "new" laptop will last at least 30 minutes while active on its battery, maybe even an hour or more (depending on the level of CPU and disk activity).

Having the generator shut down periodicly to top up the tank won't be a problem!

I think it is just lazy.

Bill what brand laptop?

If it's an IBM T2X series I have extra batteries as well if we want a spare.

No, it's an older HP from 2000/2001 era.
