Tim you do very professional work and very professional build notes. Thoroughly enjoy your threads.

Now if we could just get you to spend a few days with the Fastiva you could run in the same class as Loren with your old motor in it :thumbwink:

Doug: Much appreciated...amazing what one can learn/copy off of YouTube!

Not sure about the original engine...it is still on standby...likely need it after Friday's dyno appt. I will be sure to take a video of the rods exiting the oil pan as it crests 1000 rpm past factory redline!

My intercooler fan arrived ($110 from Amazon):

No it won't be pressurizing the intake track...(compound 'turbos'!)...but rather speeding the dyno time be cooling the intercooler between runs. 2550 CFM carpet drier fan...couple of sticks of wood and a bungee cord means we are in business. The hood opening is angled so it won't slide down due to my precise build measurements.

The shop does not have a fan (or won't use it to mar the finish) and took 3.5 hours to run the car with lengthy 30-45 minute cool downs. This might make more power to replicate an ideal situation on the street.

We will see how it works on Friday...fresh oil change-complete, next is air cleaner, fuel filter, AFR sensor, and spark plugs. Baseline of all consumables.

330 WHP on the last visit...now with an up pipe, fresh shortblock, Cosworth heads, and adding boost to 25 psi.

Success:

Image

A cooler run posted 412 WHP and 367 WTQ...better than expected...likley attributed to the ported heads-the remainder is very standard Subaru hop ups.

Beautiful 7800 rpm music! 10 trips to redline to fine tune...my dyno fan worked like a champ...bringing the intercooler down to ~110 degrees prior to each run...it gained nearly 60 degrees on each single gear pull!

Turbo is maxed out...Blouch rates the Dominator 1.5 XTR at 480 CHP, I'm likely just above that if not shy of an even 500 CHP.

It was past its efficiency...

I made 330 WHP (327 actually) at 20 PSI on the factory motor. This visit the turbo could only attain 20 PSI (23 PSI spike)...but the engine make 80 more WHP. More timing was used (forged pistons), more specific IAT data...and the Cosworth cylinder heads (and a fresh ring seal). I doubt my 190,000 valve springs, heavier rotating assembly help any either on the original motor.

Now to put some miles on it...

So is this car now bumped to M1 or M0?

He's modded the factory turbo, so he would bump up a class from wherever he started. Too lazy to look it up.

He would be BS, M1, so a bump puts him in M0.

Joe is a bit concerned about some increased competition? :snicker:

I don't plan for a class so whatever FAST decides...

Short video of the commotion...rather boring, but lots going on inside the crank case!

Whoa that was fast? Did you even get to another gear?

It is a third gear run...all they do. I've had a 4th gear pull done, but the numbers are nearly the same, wear the dyno set more, and extend the spool down time (dyno time=$). Florida doesn't let owners drive...we just watch the torture.

From what I understand, dyno runs are generally done in whatever gear is closest to 1:1 ratio. That is usually 4th gear in most cars. Full pull from idle (or close to) up to redline.

Pretty awesome numbers. Amazing what you can wring out of a little 4 banger these days.

ASoda: Agreed, but most operators I've run into prefer third for the reasons I mentioned. In the big scheme of things...repeatability for tuning is the true use of a dyno. The numbers are somewhat meaningless.

Very rarely will someone do a full pull from idle...way too hard on an engine below typically 2000 rpm. I've done it on the Corvette (stock cam/1000 rpm/operator was reluctant) and it took it just fine, but when I added 'bigger' cam (duration) it would not accept WOT at that low rpm.

The turbo cars...driveabilty is not an issue, although no reason to start 1000's of rpm before the spool of the turbo (wasted time). This turbo starts to spin ~3300 rpm or so (still testing it out) so he started at 3000 usually-of course he didn't just do power runs, this dyno is more than an inertia (Dyno Jet)...part throttle and mapping of different zones was the goal.

That was the 6th time the Subaru has been on the pump...the Corvette was likely twice that.

Dyno's are fun...true test of a powerplant...lots of scattered engine parts laying around though...

Ha, well, I didn't mean to imply that they just mat the throttle from 700 rpm.

Dang, that is only 1whp less than the Banana Beast, even your peak torque is only 30 less, though I do have a lot more "area under the curve" but again, its 6.3L compared to 2.5L, very impressive.

Les: I agree, the Corvette will have more usable power/torque in comparison even if the peak numbers are similar-ie you would still pass me on a road course. I also know your's sound better!

Philip: I'm anxious to see how it performs. One reason upgrading the car is enjoyable...transforms the car into something new.

Drew: Apologies...wasn't trying to drop a hammer on you. I find dyno's interesting (good hard data) and learned some while using them. Fascinating to visit a shop as some real performing cars in attendance (like autocross compared to a car show!) I typically ask for a 2000 rpm to redline run...this time I only got a portion of it.

I may have solved an issued that has plagued my car for last 3 years...progressively getting worse...vibration at 82 mph on decel...and 130 mph at power.

The rear differential mounting bushings!

Image

It is very soft and is ovalized (hard to tell in the image).

$40 Turn In Concepts...arrived in quick time (comfort version).

Image

Not difficult to access...thought it would be much harder due to the obstacles:

Image

Sawzall cut the center out...fingers pushed the rest out-no metal shell:

Image

Image

No more vibration on the highway...it was vibration that shook the wing, hood scoop, backsides...spent some $$'s trying to fix it...traced to a $40 part.

See what happens next week at 150 mph...track day.

Can I borrow the love pillows? There used to be a 25cent slot for vibration in a bed at most motels.
