My husband and I are thinking of signing up for the novice school. Is it possible to do this when we only have one car for the two of us?

In a regular autocross, people frequently share cars. At the school, you could also share a car, but it's possible you might lose some driving time with driver switches. Said switches could also get tiring - you'll be driving the car for several hours over the course of the day. It could be done, but it's not optimal.

I think you'd enjoy the school more and get more out of it by not sharing a car, even if that means either driving a "non-performance car" (how many of us autocross those regularly, show of hands!) or even a rental car. The school isn't about being fast or anything, it's about learning technique.

Steve is right, though... all the hustling in and out of the car is going to cut into your driving time, the time you could be talking to your instructor about what you did right or wrong, etc. Negative impact all around.

The car we autocross with is a 350Z with an automatic transmission.

Our other car is a Subaru Outback, auto trans also, but I thought it would not be helpful since it is AWD and maybe a little topheavy.

I can drive a stick (drove them for about 8-10 years), but the last manual transmission car we owned was in 1987-ish.

Would it be beneficial to drive the Subaru?

The Subaru is likely to be easier to learn the basics in. Sort of depends on what level you're at as a driver, I guess.

It was my first autocross. I drive mostly like the old lady that I am.
I came in 45th.

So maybe the Subaru will be fine for where I am in my driving career?

Honestly, you'd probably get more out of the Subaru experience. You'll be able to push it hard without fear of the back end coming around, and the limits will be lower so you don't have to go as fast to find them.

I want to thank everyone that has volunteered already. We do need a couple of more course workers. I will be speaking very briefly to all of you that have already volunteered, when I see you at the auto-x on sunday, if you"re attending.

To those of you not attending. I just want to remind you of this event in case you forgot to mark it on your calendar. Please don't forget about our beloved FAST novice school and I can't wait to see you there.

You finished ahead of your co-driver. I think you get first choice. You should campaign the Z and make him drive the Subie. =]

Bring both cars and you 2 can swap them out as you wish and get experience in both types of vehicles.

Maybe a good idea, maybe not. The cars will drive completely differently, might be better to stick with one and waste less time figuring the car out.
