Re: October 5th post event
Man, I love FAST Classic events! They just make me feel good.
Gotta agree on the course. It was pretty much what I wanted it to be. My only real gripe was that the acceleration runs into and out of the turn-around, and probably the one at the finish made it a little more of a "power course" than is ideal. I tried to balance that with some slower and more technical stuff, but a good driver in a fast car would really shine on this course.
What I really liked about it was that it had several "needles" to thread. None of them were so tight that you couldn't get through them even in a bigger car. But, if you were off-line or charged at them too fast, they became VERY difficult.
Thanks to the usual cast of characters for helping set it up, and to everyone who stuck around to help pack up. For those who weren't there... we were fully packed and on our way out the gate by 2:30 after 8 "official" runs and one or two additional runs for most people. The Mayor took the Food Vette out to get us an assortment of dogs from Coney Island Drive Inn, and the weather was nothing short of perfect!

Re: October 5th post event
Another great day with the FAST gang!
A big thank you to everyone who helped out today. Even with no one signed up to do tear down, the trailer seemed to be loaded in record time. I don't know, maybe it's the weather. What ever it is, you all are great.
And speaking of the weather, what a day. I can't remember the last day I didn't see a cloud. Today was nothing but blue skies from horizon to horizon. I didn't even see a contrail. Truly a great day weather wise and a hopeful sign for events to come.
Don't forget to get signed up for the 18th. See you then!

Re: October 5th post event
I'm pretty sure even with ass way loose on the first run in 55F heat and trac control OFF on full depth tread 5000 mile Sumitomo 360wear + W summer rated tires AND for the total 6 runs I took in Wife's "Devil with the red dress" Vette I never hit a single cone. AND yes I stayed on course.
Now that's frickin' amazing for me to do that today!! I'm rarely clean on all runs even with race rubber. C5's are awesome cars. Anyone can not only look good driving one they are equally balanced with the Miata and RX-8 - 50/50 but with both torque, HP, smoothology and a really good touring suspension. I have no idea how old the shocks are but the car now has 115k on it, is 15 years old and can go another 115 easily on our many future road trips. BEST ROAD CAR ON THE PLANET.
Les has known this for years but I am a new disciple. C5's Rock. Guess that means Les does too
I also need to own a high mileage MazdaSpeed Miata at some point as Matt's car is totally wicked when it's not sending me off into the grass when pulling a redline shift with previous issues WHICH HE HAS FIXED. Go Matt.
Ron Ricer told me he turned a 49 second run in John's car. Well I was thrilled to pull a 54.0 in the vette. SO giant salute
to both John and Ron in that cromedome Miata. Guess one needs to actually "setup" their car to win big at FAST.
Best wishes to the ailing 240 that wasn't, Eva and Doug sickos who stayed away from me and that asshole who lied and brought ebola to TX and woke up the WHO.

Re: October 5th post event
So I guess to go fast I need a time to shoot for and 8 runs to get there. The same thing happened yesterday too, pulled something out of my ass on my 8th run! it was all about pushing past what I was comfortable with and being OK with going sideways at 70mph.
The course was more fun than I expected. It showed that you can have more than slaloms are Brooksville!
Should have gone with a regular hot dog for lunch... After eating the bbq dog I looked like I'd just delivered a baby.
And finally after languishing behind Drew for what seems like years, I have a win in M2! (Although I think Drew ran a 48.x later on in the day?) I guess I can't justify buying new tires after all. Dammit.

Re: October 5th post event
A majority of the year I hate Florida weather, but days like today almost make it worthwhile. You just couldn't ask for a better day of autocross than this weather with the folks of FAST.
Add to that a fun, fast course and a chance to get inspired by the runs of the FAST elite.
Here's a run by a novice having a blast!

You'll like the Oct 18 course. My design goal for that one was to NOT include a slalom. Of course, it's "slalomy"... impossible to not do that on an airstrip. But, there is no actual slalom.jaball77 wrote:The course was more fun than I expected. It showed that you can have more than slaloms are Brooksville!

I knew I should have talked Loren into only counting the first 6 runs. Fourteen thousands of a second, fourteen thousands... Re: October 5th post event
I knew I would like classic events. but I didn't know I would like them this much. Big thanks to everyone that helps put these events on.
The three groups were perfect (..and lunch was great! ) . I get so much enjoyment just watching the runs. I finally was able to watch without having to keep an eye on cones and whatnot while waiting for my work assignment and run.
Last event on my tires ( old, all season, budget tires ), but definitely the best. After overshooting everything last time, I reevaluated my driving and realized I was fundamentally driving differently than I was at my first autocross. I actually got worse.
I did a 53.9+1 cone, silly mistake. I figure since this was my 3rd event I'm still allowed to be making them
Better than hitting 3+ cones a run like I did last time. But it did show me that my tires "could" do a fair time, I didn't feel like I left much time in that. Really happy my cone free times weren't tragically slow, still considering the tires. I feel like now I can get around the course allright so I can begin trying to be more controlled and picking better lines and hopefully in the end faster
Really liked the course layout. It was simple but so much fun. Such a great flow to it. I wish I had grabbed 3rd gear on the 7th run, I was on the limiter for what felt like days. I just didn't think I could downshift to 2nd for the hairpin without upsetting the car.

Looking good Ricky, I hear those tires making some noise, sounds like you're "pushing harder", nice! I'm whooped. Loads of fun out there today! Coney dog-overindulgence right before cone shagging = FAIL.
Big ups to Ron for handing me my ass in my own car (with a passenger no less).
Watching him 4-wheel drift (no shit) through Station 5 was so cool. With Ron well abreast of the learning curve in my car, I'm going to have to find my toes and get on them, stat. This season's going to be a hoot!

And, while I did run a 48.x in John's car, somebody put a bunch of traffic cones out there and apparently I am supposed to go around all of them.
All of them? Really?
I want to thank John and Matt and Paul for letting me take a few runs in your cars. John and Matt, you have me eyeing Miatas with bad intent.
I can't try ice racing in Florida, but a run or two in Paul's car is the next best thing.
