12/19 FAST Relay Autocross @ Brooksville

Okay, what's a Relay Autocross?
Simple, it's a team-based autocross competition! We'll split up into teams, and as each member of a team takes a run, it contributes to their teams cumulative "first run" time. It's going to be a bit more work for the timing crew, but we'll have a spreadsheet set up to handle the grunt work and keep "live results" available on the big screen throughout the event.
It will work something like this:
- Each team runs their first driver through a run. At that point, you know where each team stands, but it ain't over yet.
- Each team runs their next driver, same team order. Again, you know where each team stands, but it still ain't over.
- Repeat step 2 for each driver on the team. Things can get pretty exciting for the "anchor" driver if their team is a little behind!
Once we've gone through one run for each driver, we have a cumulative "relay" time for that team.
After registration is closed and we know how many drivers we'll have, we'll decide how many teams to split into, and teams will be selected as evenly as possible based on who is registered.
BASIC EVENT DETAILS:
- This event will be run similar to a FAST Classic event. Very casual.
- Two-driver cars are allowed, as usual. Please be sure to list your co-driver, and all drivers must register separately.
- This event is not part of the FAST season championship.
- Open to all licensed drivers.
- All drivers AND guests must pre-register.
- Lunch will be included for all drivers and guests.
- It will be a seriously good time!
- Because it's so close to Christmas and we don't expect a huge turnout, we're leaving this event open to all licensed drivers.
- No experience required! (team members will have incentive to ride along with and coach the noobs on their team!)
Driver Registration - $48
Guest Registration - $6

Just out of curiosity, how are the teams being created? When I registered, I read that it will be a process of putting cars together in a way that will make the teams competitive, but I am most curious about teams across classes. The main reason I ask is that my friend from the Jax region will be joining us. Anyone that attended the event at FIRM probably saw his red '08 Mustang. He races on Hoosier A6s, so he registered for this event as an R1, but in our regular groups, the R1 cars are all little missiles that are in a league of their own. My friend is usually about 2-3 seconds faster than my Forester when we go to the same events, which is still within the times we see in M2. Just thought I'd share this info since no one is familiar with his car and he might be the only R1 driver to register.

It won't be done strictly by class, if that's what you're asking. What I'll likely do is look at the results by time for a couple of recent events to ensure the top drivers are evenly split between teams, and also that the slower drivers are evenly split. It won't be terribly scientific, but it will be close enough and surely better than a "schoolyard pick" method.
An R1 car would qualify as one of those "top drivers" to be evenly distributed between teams. If we expect him to be "really fast", we'll be sure to offset him with some of the slower cars to balance the team.
Much like the info you just provided, I'd try to find some online results for any "unknown" driver to help reference them against a "known" driver to help place them appropriately. We do the same sort of thing when we seed our FAST Duel tournament brackets.
Try not to take this too seriously, though. This is just a fun December event.

It's all about peace on Earth, goodwill toward men, and talking trash to the other teams.

So what you're saying is that Greg A., Drew, John and I can't be a team?

Haha. I couldn't agree more. Autocross is something you can't really take seriously when you drive a modified grocery getter
My question came purely out of curiosity. This event in particular is one that I've been looking forward to for a while, and I'm trying to get a handful of people to come along, so getting a good understanding makes it easier to explain. Thanks for the answer!

We're looking forward to it, as well. It's always fun to do something a little different.

Drew can be a team. You, Greg, and John get to drive against him. Probably still not fast enough....

I'm towing the trailer so will be driving my truck up to the event, which means no ride for me.
Anyone want to do a codrive - same team or not? I'm good for gas or tire money, and if we're not on the same team I promise to not beat you too badly...

He lies. But, somebody give him a ride, anyway.

Steve, what is involved in towing the trailer? I would be more than happy to do that so you can drive your car. I will be there with my truck anyway. Just let me know.

Won't make this one as conflicts with wife's yearly midday xmas party.
The rest of you who aren't working (what's that?) really need to get the seat time and competition!!
I should have some new better (?) tires for the Vette after Christmas. Yes yet another experiment. In theory this one comes with a real guarantee tho'? Everything in racing is a $$aving experiment but nothing as drastic as a Fastiva for sure. Worst case I can always swap wheels with wife's car:)
Happy Holidays.

And thank you too, Jon. We'll take a rain check for your services. What's involved is basically moving the trailer 100 feet. But it's done first thing in the morning (as in, very first), and it's the last thing to do before leaving at the end of the day. It's a long day to ask for. But if we're really stuck, we're not too shy to ask!

Steve doesn't have a car, he has a garage ornament just like me, and they both need some polishing.

Nope, I have to sit this one out. Like the Mayor, I'll be doing family Christmasy stuff.

"Polish the ornament."
