Danny and I are going to pick up a 1991 civic DX sedan for $250 tomorrow. We should have it passing tech before registration closes. I registered with my car until we have it ready.

Because we are cheap asses we are not going to get a tag for the car and will need to tow it. Using a tow bar like this one seems to be the cheapest option but I have never flat towed a vehicle. any advice?

I've never flat-towed, either. I'd suggest researching whether the car you are towing has any issues with it. (people who tow cars behind RV's generally make that info available... some cars don't properly lubricate transmission parts if they are being flat-towed, possibly other issues, as well)

You may also want to see if you can flat tow an unregistered and non-plated car. I'm pretty sure if the wheels are rolling, it has to be registered.

Called The DMV. You are correct, if the wheels are rolling it must be insured and registered. We got the car today and it should pass tech by the 13th. The bigger problem is getting it there. I don't have a plate I can transfer, or a flatbed to put it on. Might just have to give in and spend the money for title/insurance/tag.

Also, anyone have a good name for our new girl? I want to call it the ciST bur people seem to dislike that name for some reason.

You might look into a tow dolly. The kind that supports just two wheels rather than 4. Not sure where that fits in the legality issue, but if you can "tow" an unregistered car on a dolly, you should be able to pick one of those up for under $500.

I was also thinking Cilon. The dolly would be illegal without insuring and registering the car. The clerk made it very clear that if any of the wheels are on the road than it must be insured and registered. It's annoying, but the last thing I want is for the car to be impounded.

my friend rented a dolly from uhaul to tow a CRX shell with his integra twice...that was an adventure...

So long as the brakes work and the fluids stay inside I'll park in grid next to it.
Hard to name a car you haven't "raced" or driven a lot yet.
