Is installation of a cold air intake system a class changer?

Just glanced at the FAST rules and it looks like CAI is allowed in stock class. However, if you run with a club that uses SCCA classing rules, it will bump you out of street class. ("Street" = "Stock" now in the SCCA)

*edit* is this for the 2011 Maxima in your profile? It looks like it already draws cold air when it's bone stock. My 350Z had a similar setup. When I prepped it for STU, I did some research and ended up just using a K&N "drop-in" with the stock setup.

It is for the Maxima. Nothing purchased yet. Just doing some preliminary research. Thanks for the info.

Mike is spot on. In SCCA "stock is stock", "if the rules don't say you can, you can't". If you want to compete with them or anybody else, you need to think about their rules.

FAST is more friendly to the "run what you brung" crowd. We know that your CAI isn't going to gain you enough to matter because where we draw the line is with mods that change fuel. That limits how much more power you could make, even if you did a full intake, header, exhaust... you can't optimize the fuel to go with it.

So, as far as we're concerned, knock yourself out. "The FAST rules don't say you can't, you CAN."

But... keep in mind that autocross is MUCH more about the driver and the ability of the car to handle than it is about an extra 5 hp. I'd be saving my money for a new trick set of shocks, or my next set of tires... or more entry fees.
