Any number of people I know have had alloy wheels crack but not fail totally. Especially cheaper aftermarket ones. This is an extreme case and should have been avoidable? I never thought about chrome hiding a crack. Yikes. This was a C6 Z06. Some of the discussion contains valuable info. Probably why I never buy wheels from a boneyard or an otherwise unknown source. Since I normally stick with OEM or quality brand wheels I've never had a problem in many years of autocrossing. And of course I always re-torque my lugnuts after 50 miles of driving.

Hope this heads up makes people look at the inner surface of their wheels occasionally.

Damn every 50 miles! If those 50 miles are from only auto crossing and tracking then makes sense but for daily driving, sounds pretty excessive.

No. ONLY once after the first 50 miles after initial torqueing with your new tires. They should never come loose after that. However, some clubs check the torque on at least two nuts on every wheel @ every event. They assume people are changing tires at the event and forgetting to tighten them. (Good catch on that. Only do that when the wheels are removed/rotated.)

I also drive on a new set of tires for 50 miles to initially set the cords no more than 55mph. So it's all done the same time/day.

makes me concerned about the ssr's i got repaired by welding and getting them unbent, but they are 9.2 lb...

I had 6.5 pound wheels on a Miata once. Forged Volk CE28N 14x5.5" Wheel and tire package was less than 26 pounds.

You don't need 30 pound wheels on a 2000 pound car with 120 hp.

For the hippo you drive, perhaps, but there are numerous low weight wheels available, made by well-known and reputable companies. The black Enkeis I AX are 12# and change. The Kosei rims I bought are even lighter. Wouldn't have bought them except they obtained the manufacturing license and process from Enkei and used the same process for making theirs.

I am sort of blown away at what's out there now. See what happens when your "new" car is 13 years old.

My wheels are probably the same age as your corvette Outside of buying volks or rpf1's these are another light weight option. RPF1s limit future brake upgrades and volks...2k for a set, I'll hold off on that

I love 15in wheels, light wheels, and cheap performance tires
