FAST Classic - Oct 12 - Venice Airport

Postby Loren » Tue Oct 01, 2019 10:07 am

This is one of those strange calendar anomalies where we've only got one event in the month of October. It's going to be at the Venice Airport Festival Grounds. Typical short Venice course. But, we're adding a practice course that you can drive on when you're not running or working the main course. So, there's ample opportunity for some extra seat time!

This is a Classic event, which means fewer entries, more runs and no formal novice instruction. We're allowing "some" novices and even a couple first-timers at Classic events now, but in very limited numbers. If you're one of those people, you might want to register earlier than usual.

We'll be providing lunch for all registered drivers and guests at this event.

Registration is open until October 9th, but will likely be filled before then. Y'all know what to do.

This event is at Venice, which is another restricted airport site, so pre-registration is required for ALL drivers and guests.

Here's the main course map. The practice course is top secret. (but, it will be a lot of slalom action)

29 people are already registered! Are you one of them???

Nope, not registered. We will be visiting the cool mountians of western Virginia. Too bad I couldn't "borrow" a certain red Miata for the trip.

If you take the turn around from the top, you're guaranteed to FTD.

Fast entry or fast exit?

Conventional wisdom says "slow in, fast out."

But, here... if you take the fast entry, you're starting with a fair bit of speed, and adding MORE speed. Assuming you can scrub the speed for the turn-around, you could get higher top speed going that way. Maybe.

If you take the tight entry, then you get the good turn-around exit... but, you have to squeak through a 50-foot slalom. So, it's going to limit how much speed you can get through there.

In general, I think I agree that slow in, fast out is the way to go. But... it really depends on exactly how we set it up. And things don't always drive the way you expect them to.

Remember, the scale of the map gives you cones that are 4' diameter. That's a lot of wiggle room at setup.

Yea I thought about it for a sec for taking the turn around from the top but just like you said, that 50 foot slalom really kills it. All that braking(non aliens dont apply :snicker: ) you have to do for it. But again, maybe slower cars might benefit better :dunno: .

Easily 5 runs on each course. Likely more.

Registration closes tomorrow. Looking like a pretty small event so far. Maybe 2 run groups? Not sure how that will play out for a practice course. :dunno:

It was 2. And the practice course worked out very well.

Here's the scoop.
