new Novice Coodinator position

Postby Native » Sun Jun 14, 2009 3:48 pm

FAST just got that much friendlier to novices. We've started a new work assignment at each event - Novice Coodinator.

There will be at least one Novice Coordinator, and usually two, per event. They will be the ones who lead the novice coursewalk, which we are going to try to do regularly at 9:30 prior to the drivers' meeting. After that, they will actively seek out the first-timers, coordinate ride-alongs for novices before they take their first run, ride with novices or find someone to ride with them for their first run or two and more if they need or want it. The goal is the offering of guidance and instruction, building confidence, and generally helping novices (or anyone else who wants it, by the way) find their way around the course, avoid DNFs, and attempt to make the overall FAST autocross experience that much more enjoyable. The coodinators will be clearly identified at each event, and Novices will be encouraged (not required) to enjoy their expertise.

Jeremy (Jeremy17) will be holding one of the positions when he's in attendance. Jamie (or whoever is assigning workers) will choose the other, from a pool of folks who voluteer their willingness. So, if you'd be interested in playing Novice Coordinator as a work assignment, say so. We're limiting the pool to those who have instructed at a novice school before, either ours or someone's.

Jeremy rode along with me a few times and he did a great job pointing out where I was losing time. With his help I cut over 3 seconds off my time.

I think setting people aside to do these ride-alongs is a great idea!

Thanks for the compliment. I hope to get better at instructing. I haven't done it that much in the past.

I also think it worked out pretty good. I talked to everyone that signed up as a Novice. I think I prevented quite a few DNF's also. That first crossover section was pretty tricky to see for a Novice.

Great idea.
I was very frustrated when I first started. (That was at PCA not at FAST.) In hind sight I'm surprised I kept coming back.
And obviously the offer of help is not as good as having a person with an actual position.

If I've only autocrossed an S2000 one time, does that qualify me as a novice to get Free rides from Jeremy? :)
