Work on Trailer/Generator Day.

Postby treekiller » Thu Mar 29, 2007 4:34 pm

Being the cheif of timing, truck, and trailer with my home SCCA region years ago I have experenced all the teething pains as the club grew. I can say the computers and all is a MAJOR move in the right direction. this will require some Due dilligance on our part.

I implemented several methods of power untill we found one that sucked the least. I did the whole 12V inverter charger gig for a year which was poor at best when we had 30 people at an event but I helped grow the club to 200 car events so heaters, AC, PA, Several computers became required.

I don't want to change your relaxed atmosphere but gearing up for the future is somthing you can't discount. with percision and a few system changes Fast can even increase it's presence with best events in the area. ( joke deleted to protect the overly sensitive  ) a well run event is a pleasure to work and even better for the participants.

I intend some changes to help out the generator, most importantly getting a Marine quick disconnect on the fuel line so we can attach a 5 gallon sealed marine outboard tank to the trailer. this kills several birds with one stone.

1. Fillup at any gas station no carrying gas cans
2. No gasoline INSIDE the trailer
3. Generator will run for several events on 5 gal

A Real Muffler will Quiet the generator quite well and allow some more location options.

this club brings me quite a bit of enjoyment, I just know I am good at these things and I know how much of a diffrence they make.

Here is my proposal, if we bring the Trailer to my Holiday house, I have tools a big garage etc. I will host a work on Trailer day, Buy a couple cases of beer (pepsi for Loren) and give the old girl a once over.

My wishlist.

1. A good cleaning. it's okay but a bit ratty.
2. timer shelf in the corner (clear up some desk space)
3. hard mounted battery shelf with charger (for light batteries) so no-one needs to drag them home.
4. shelfs and spaces for everything, and a stacking order, this will facilitate quicker setup and teardown since the only thing without a "home" should be the cones.
5. hardwire and mount the PA so all that is needed is a quick plug in of the speakers and it's live. old fashon PA speakers are fine mounted to the roof if you don't want to bother with connecting the ones we have.
6.For the tent and poles etc a pair of 6" dia PVC tubes (with threaded caps) mounted to the roof will make a ton of space and keep them off the floor.

Anything else??

If we could do this before the next event it'll be great. I have the tools the tallent and the beer!

Overly sensitive reply removed, after poster realized he was not qualified to make such jokes. :)

A marine tank is a good idea, but there's no fuel line on the generator, the carb is mounted to the top of the tank and draws fuel directly from it.

Muffler is a good idea, but you can't go to restrictive on a 5hp engine or it won't run, and the one's I've used didn't quiet the engine much.

We have a 2 gallon gas can coming via Drew, and 2 gallons of gas will run the generator all day and as far as hauling gas goes, that's never going to be a problem, I'll put the left over fuel in my gas tank. :D

like I said the out put looks like a standard 1" flame arrestor, if you can neck that out to a 1.5" slip on for a motorcycle it should help, and thay are only $30
