Any Tire Guys Out There?

I have been shopping for tires for my 2007 350Z. I ran across a deal that I can't pass up. Lightly used tires (5000 miles) and 18" OEM chrome 5 spoke rims. These are the dealer accessory ones. My question has to do with the TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system) that comes with the car. In 2007 the Feds mandated that all cars have this system, so Nissan switched from the fully functional (you got 32 psi in the right rear tire) indicator to the dummy (!) light (one of your tires, somewhere, may or may not be low, but we think so).

Here is my question, finally, the new (used) rims have OEM TPMS senders off of another 2007. If I swap the wheel set to the car as-is will the system work without any further effort? Will I need to take them to be re-programmed? The dealer gets $80 to do this, anyone know a Westside shop that can do this? Do I need to swap my old senders into the new rims?

I searched the 350Z forums but only found ricer dudes with no clue. esssh.

I believe you can solve this problem with a $2 roll of black tape and a $5 tire gauge.

Yea, I hear that, however, its the only way I can get wifey to tell me when something is awry.

I'm 99% sure you'll need to reprogram the sensors. You should be able to do it from the cab of the car. I know C6's can...of course I know nothing about the Nissan ones.

It didn't matter anyway, the TPMS sensors were not on the new wheels, just rubber stems. So, I had to bring the car to tire shop so they could swap them in. I wanted the new tires rebalanced anyway so, whatever. Had to leave the car over night so I can't wait to see them on there.

You have resolved this for now. Can't speak for Nissan BUT just installed a used set of 05 RX8 tpm sensors on my 04 and they worked without resetting. The instructions for Mazda are a bit silly: "Turn ignitiion on then off. Let car sit more than 15 mintues. Then drive car over 16mph for at least 10 minutes. (Note that this is nearly impossible in a city with stop signs.) You will have to find the exact procedure for your car. Japanese must enjoy weird instructions. Every time I pull the battery cable to work on the car they make me do the entire "Hokey Pokey" dance to reset just two controls.

From what I have read the dealer has a scanner that they point at each sensor thru the sidewall to reprogram them, and an OBD plug in device that resets the computer. Takes 3 mins to do the procedure and 10 minutes for them to prepare the $99.95 invoice.
