How do they fit in the displacement scheme? I heard someone else talk about multiplying by 2. So a 1.3L Wankel would be equivalent to a 2.6L piston engine.

So unless those Rx-8's signed up for the next event are turbo they don't have to run in the +3.0L class, I guess no one is going to stop you from bumping your car up a class though.

A thought:
One rotor wankels in under 3L class.
Two rotor wankels in over 3L.

You'd have to go back quite awhile to find a one-rotor Wankel in a U.S.-market car...any NSUs over here? And it seems that 3 and 4-rotor rotaries are pretty rare engines.

Looking at other clubs' rulesets, the math seems to be rotary displacement x 2 x # of rotors...which pushes everything beyond the early 12A-powered cars into the 3 liters and up category unless they're turbocharged. I'm not sure I'm ready to throw a torque-challenged 13B-powered car to the wolves, so I want to do some additional research.

Suggestions are welcome, but I need to make a decision by Tuesday night...I'll be on travel again Wednesday and Thursday, and may not have Net access.

A quick review of last year's results showed this:

Dec - RX8 finished 33rd. 7th of 10 in D. In my mostly stock Miata, my time was faster.

Nov - RX8 finished 9th, 17th. 1st ,3rd/4 in D. I wasn't there.

Sept - RX8 finished 19, 31. 6,11/11. My time was faster.

Aug - RX8 finished 16,17,34. 6,7,14/15. My time was faster.

July - 13, 27, 28, 32, 46. Not novice was 4,12/15. I got beat bad.
note - one rotary entry was an '83 RX7...

June - RX8 finished 34. 14/15. My time was faster.

Conclusion - usually I can beat an RX8  Really, I think my point is that overall, not accounting for how they may be driven, RX8s seem to be good for midpack finishes - don't see 'em as class killers even in G. Of course, if modded, turbo'd, or on race tires, move them up...

The 2x factor for rotaries really only comes into play when they are allowed to be heavily modified. Porting, engine management and really open intake and exhaust really opens them up to crazy power and crazy high RPMs.

Since our classing is simply "mods or no mods", I think that where the line is drawn will keep the unmodified rotaries from being a major threat. Once modded, yeah, one could theoretically walk on the "Under 3L Mod" class. But, at this point, I don't think it's worth making specific rules for.

In the under 3L mod class, we allow 1.8 turbo Miatas... which can easily make 250hp and even more if they want it. I don't think a streetable NA rotary is going to be more of a problem than that.

If y'all think a pre-emptive measure is in order, I'd make it a simple: any turbocharged rotary goes in the over 3L class. Leave displacement calculation out of it.

The "Push Harder, Suck Less" philosophy explained:
Push Harder - Drive as close to the limit of your tires as possible.
Suck Less - Drive something resembling a proper racing line.

X-tra power = 0
you guys worry too much, from what I've seen the new RX-8s are on par with the mustangs and camaros, the RX-7s on the other hand have some more potential.

That is because of the drivers. An RX8 handles much better than a mustang. In the SCCA, they are a B stock car. I don't think it is a problem, however, since we also have a A stock S2000 in the under 3L class.
