FAST Rule Changes for 2012-2013

Postby Loren » Fri Jul 20, 2012 11:47 am

We convened a committee of representatives from the club and hashed out some classing and rule changes for the coming season. Please note that this is a notification, not a discussion. These are the new rules that will be in effect starting with the August event.

The executive summary is: No race seats in Stock, reducing to two Race Tire classes, adding limits to Mod Street Tire classes, and created a new unlimited Mod Street Tire class. Details below.

Stock
Add to the exclusion list:
"Replacement of driver or passenger seats with non-reclining race seats."

This allows the use of alternate adjustable-back factory seats (from another car) or adjustable-back aftermarket seats.

Race Tire
Classes R3 and R4 will be dropped, remaining classes restructured as follows:
R1 - Modified and Race cars
R2 - Stock Race Tire

Class R2 must meet all the requirements of stock category except for the street tire limitation.

Modified Category
Complete mod rule set revised as follows:

If your car does not meet all of the Stock Category qualifications, you may qualify for the Modified Category. The Modified Category is intended for modified, but streetable cars on street tires.

Qualifications for the Modified Category are minimal:
  • Tires must be treadwear 140 or greater
  • Cars must be street legal in the State of Florida, but registration and insurance is not required.
  • The intent of this category (except Open Modified) is that cars should not be so extensively modified that they could not be returned to stock. In general, cutting & welding is bad, bolt-on stuff is good; looking like a stripped race car is bad, looking like a complete street car is good.
Modifications Limits
Modifications for classes M1, M2 and M3 are unlimited except for the following:
  • All exterior body panels are required unless factory-optional (such as t-tops or convertible tops), aftermarket panels of alternate materials are allowed.
  • All factory glass or equivalent (OE style safety glass) must be present.
  • A mostly-complete interior is required. Missing minor trim or a panel or two is acceptable, as is removal of the back seat.
  • Lightening - Any bolt-on part that can be removed without affecting the appearance of the exterior or interior of the car can be removed. No parts may be CUT to remove them.
  • Bracing - Any bolt-in bracing is allowed. Braces may not be welded to the car.
  • Engine Swaps - Modification (cutting and welding) or replacement of bolt-in subframes to allow for installation of an engine (or transmission or differential) is permitted. Extreme modification of the shell of the car, including the firewall is not allowed. Permitted engine swaps are intended to be mostly bolt-in replacements.
Open Modified (M0)
The Open Modified class (M0) is for cars that exceed any of the above limits, but are otherwise street legal and on street tires. Cars that bump up from M1 also go to M0. For safety, doors, hood and a complete firewall are required for ALL Modified cars.

Class Progression:
Certain modifications will result in a car being classified in a higher class than normal.
  • Bump up one class for adding forced induction.
  • Bump to donor class OR up one class (whichever is higher) for a significant (+25% HP increase) engine swap that is not a common bolt-in swap that results in a factory-available (US market) configuration.

Yeah, that sort of thing is why I wanted to get this sorted out and posted as soon as possible. August doesn't matter much, it's a casual non-points event. So, this gives people about 2 months to prepare for the September event. 8-)

Those rules read really nicely. Well done!

Wish I would have known that this was happening, but I guess that was the point to limit discussion.

What was being fixed in reducing R classes from 4 to 2?

Guess this means that the camber rule is not going to change?

Not enough Race Tire competitors to support 4 classes.

The camber rule was added last year, was not discussed as a change for this year.

So "open mod race tire" is run with race cars. or is the race car class dropped? The reason I ask is that the mustang is waay past the "modified" thing at this point.

If you put street tires on it, you can run it in the NEW open modified street tire class M0 (where there are no limits on mods).

It doesn't have to be for M0, if I read the rule correctly. If it's possible to insure it and tag it for use on public roads (whether you actually do or not), it's street legal. the last time I looked in Sam's copy of the Big Book of Florida Statues, it wasn't an extensive list, and pretty common sense; an operable lighting system, a muffler attached to the exhaust, a windshield.... Loren's added a firewall, doors, and a cover over the engine as safety precautions.

For the record, "Loren" didn't act alone. These changes were the result of discussion and agreement among a committee of 5 people.

I'm just the messenger here.

Are harnesses with stock seats legal for the stock classes? After doing the enduro-cross and having a sore hip/ass the next day, I realized just how much I'd love it if I was held down into my seat a bit more. If this is unfair or there are safety concerns, no biggy; that's why I'm asking :)

Does anything say that seatbelts are restricted in any way?
