Tires Wanted ??
Another tire question, sorry for that...
Where is a decent place, local to the bay area, to pick up some used tires. Since I'm just starting out I'm not sure if I want to lay out Tire Rack money for the "good stuff" just yet. Besides, I'll be learning the ropes and wont be getting the most out of that type of tire before they would expire anyway...lol.
I live in St Pete but dont mind the drive for a good deal. I guess I would be looking for something I could daily and run on the weekends with too. I know there will be a tread wear compromise. Whatcha got?

Re: Tires Wanted ??
You're probably not going to find anything "good" in a used tire pile.
Best bet if you want used performance tires is to watch the local forums. People are always upgrading wheels or selling cars or whatever. Good used tires come up often.

Re: Tires Wanted ??
I noticed in your first post you run 17x7 rims. You would do well to move up to 8-9" rims to get the full use out of better tires.
Just moving up to a 245/40 - 17 on 8" rims would make a hugh difference in handling. Anything over 17" is really expensive.
Just wear out what you have until you can justify a newer set of wheels and gummier tires to win stickers. There are alot of 240's out there in both autocross and drifting. We've seen alot of them over the last few years.
It's even more challenging/fun running on stones than gummies and takes alot more developed skill.
It took me 4 years of frequent autocrossing to get all the speed available out of my original gatorbacks before I made the jump to extra set of R tires on factory rims. That was worth about 4 seconds instantly. I was only running about 3 seconds behind the guys on R tires so imagine their surprise that first day.
Like Loren wrote there's alot of guys that bail on cars every year with tons of spares for sale (see George's post on 5th). Spend your money on autocross entry fees for the first year.

Re: Tires Wanted ??
What awesome advise. I will keep tabs on TR's tire and wheel section for a good deal. The idea of driving on what Ive got now untill I have skill enough to take advantage of what pricier tires offer makes sense.
I agree with you about the 17x7 wheels. The 225's I run are ok, but to run anything wider I know that an 8" rim would be better. Its fairly common to swap to 5 lug in order to run a larger selection of wheels. Thats my intent any way. 4x114.3 wheels that are wider that 7" and dont look like ass get expensive really quick for what ever reason. Which is why a large number of guys do the 5 lug swap.
So, for the time being I'll find a decent set of replacement treads and focus on paying entry fees.
Thanks for the good suggestions guys.

Re: Tires Wanted ??
If you guys would run some WHEELS instead of those little popcorn fart 17s I could have supplied half the club with 275x18 Continental slicks for about 25 bucks a piece.

Re: Tires Wanted ??
Gosh, that would have been cool...
And I'd almost be insulted about the wheel size comment if F1 cars didnt run something around a 13" WHEELS and they seem to handle alright.
But they are nice wide though.

I guess 225 is pretty much the limit as far as width wise you's want to do on a 7" wide rim? At least thats what I'm getting from the reading I've been doing.

Re: Tires Wanted ??
You should get some 13's since that's what F1 runs...

I get the tires for my truck at http://supertiresonline.com/. They are in Clearwater--> http://goo.gl/maps/7Udmj. GREAT prices and housed in trailers so they aren't baking in the sun.
