FAST is now on FaceBook!

Postby Loren » Wed May 14, 2014 12:02 am

Just one more way for you to be social in our digital world:
https://www.facebook.com/FASTAutocross

Give us a "like". Share your photos, videos, trash talk and witty comments. Have fun with it!

But, don't forget to keep checking in on the forum for more "serious" discussions. Think of Facebook as an extension of chatting with folks at an event. It's all good, but when you walk away... most of what was said is lost. Forum discussions give us a lasting history that is good to have.

This is great, but I wish it were setup as a closed Group instead of a Page. As it is, I only see "official" updates from the Page (ie: FAST Autocross) in my News Feed. This means that when a non-admin posts to the Page, I won't see it unless I specifically go to the Page or unless the admin chooses to re-share it as an official post.
A Page is a broadcast entity on Facebook. A Group is a community.
Personally, I want to stay connected (and make new connections) with FAST members, not just read official posts. A Group is the best way to do that and I think it better fits what FAST is.

I'll look at changing it when I get a chance. I'm not sure it will matter, though. People just don't post there a lot.

I wouldn't want it to be a closed group, either. I want it to be public so that people can share it with other people and get new people involved. That was the whole point. We have a closed group... right here!

Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it... it's all good), right about the time I created this page, someone created a local "Autocross Buddies" group that simply exploded with pretty much anyone who's active in autocross in the Central Florida area. It's a very active group, and people talk about not just our events, but all of the events from Jacksonville and Tallahassee all the way to Orlando and Daytona, sometimes even Miami.

I'd wager it's one of those chicken and egg things. There's no activity because people aren't posting and nobody's posting because there's no activity. With a Group, you'd likely see a gradual, but noticeable increase.

Regarding the open/closed thing: I think it's popular to start as open - anyone can join without admin approval and start posting freely, then switch to closed - where the Group admins approve new members - once they notice vendors or other unwanted posters starting to spam the Group. No biggie, because it can be changed at any time.

I'll send you a Friend request - I'd be happy to help and have been trying to figure out how I could give back to FAST.

Loren: after joining up with the Autocross Buddies group, I realize you're probably right. It looks like some of the FAST crew have already made their way there and even with the other autocrossers in the area, there's not enough activity to warrant a FAST-specific group. Maybe we should just call Autocross Buddies our official unofficial group on FB?

I still use our page to broadcast information. A lot of people see it. Sometimes people share it. We pick up new "likes" on the page every week. It's worth having even if it's not where people go to discuss stuff.
