June 6 - FAST NIGHT Autocross!

Postby Loren » Tue Apr 28, 2015 12:32 pm

Skipping ahead a bit, we need to start thinking about this night event in June.

A few things before y'all start asking rapid-fire questions:
  • This will be a FAST Classic event, 3 events of prior experience required, no exceptions!
  • Registration will open early in May, limited to 50 drivers... might sell out!
  • No moon on our night of June 6th, so it will be very dark... making any lights and reflectors extremely visible.
  • Steve and I have already experimented with reflective tape on cones, which works GREAT and will make for a very cool and easily visible night course. We will also use chalk lines to help define the course.
  • Entrants MUST bring good flashlights. (we'll be checking at tech, because you'll need one when working course) We tested flashlights and even a small single-AA LED flashlight is VERY visible when pointed/waved in the direction of a driver at a distance of 400 feet!
  • Cars will run one-at-a-time, no overlap.
  • Reflective clothing is NOT advised! (drivers will be looking for reflective cones, workers want to essentially be invisible to avoid the possibility of becoming a target)
  • We'll set up in the afternoon and run some daylight runs for course familiarity.
  • Dinner will be provided.
  • It will be very different, very exciting, and very fun!

Setting up this course in daylight and practicing on it in the daylight, the event itself should run very smoothly. What could be a bit of a hassle is packing up in the dark when we're done!

It might also be good to have a "home base" of sorts that is well-lit, yet shaded from the course area.

If anyone has an RV they'd like to bring, perhaps with an awning (in case it rains, who knows?), and some good lighting... we could set that up so that the awning side is away from the course using the RV to block the light. That would give us a good place to set up our coolers and snack table and whatever.

For tear-down, we'll have no shortage of cars with headlights. We'll just need to be diligent about making sure we haven't left any equipment out and have picked up all of our trash.

You really won't need it. Standard high-beams light up the reflective tape very well. This is the same grade of tape used for highway signs. It magically grabs any light that's pointed in its general direction and beams it back at you with great intensity. Good stuff.

Aaaargh,
f*$%&*# bollocks (to use some good British profanity) .
Just been reminded that l have company flying in the evening of the 6th so I will have to miss the night event. :bangwall:
I thought I would be able to make this one since I only work mornings on Saturdays. Oh well.... I really hope it is successful enough to schedule another night event in the not too distant future as it sounds like great fun.

Have a great time out there. Now I have to work on getting the Saturday off for the next event at Tampa Bay Downs. 8-)

^ Great poster Loren!^

Now I feel even worse about not making it to the inaugural night event  it just looks like it will be enormous fun.
I meant to mention earlier, did you realize there's no link to the event registration in the first post? You usually include one to make it easy to go there directly from the event thread.
(not that I need it this time) but it makes it easier to not have to go & find the registration tab.

Now it's time to watch the Monaco GP followed by the Indy 500 - the best racing day of the year. (I tend to pass on the NASCAR race as well - Tammy will shoot me if I spend the entire day watching racing- but it's the perfect day for those that enjoy all three) :thumbwink:

Thanks! Sometimes I come up with an idea that works.

I added the link to the first post. For as many people as I'm hearing from who are so excited about this event, the number of entries is surprisingly low. :-(
