Feb 13 Valentine's Eve Event is History Now

Postby twistedwankel » Sat Feb 13, 2016 6:20 pm

Raw Pos. Pos. Class # Driver Car Model Raw Time Diff. From 1st
1 1 S0 60 Ken Marion 2004 Porsche GT3 36.523 0.000 0.000
2 1 R1 66 Elliott Harvey 1966 Datsun 2000 36.525 0.002 0.002
3 2 R1 24 Les Davis 1982 Wheeeeee Dub 36.525 0.000 0.002
4 1 S4 321 Philip Petrie 1996 Mazda Miata 37.945 1.420 1.422
5 1 S1 73 Dat Nguyen 2007 Mazda MX-5 38.074 0.129 1.551

This I think sums up the awesomeness of today's racing with almost a 3 way tie for FTD to the nearest .002 difference.

Les and Elliot tied for FTD in R1. Pretty awesome for Les with his year old slicks and just got the car running.

Super kudo's to Les for making VW quiet. I couldn't believe the difference from when Scott used to drive it!! I was the starter and some of the "door slammers" sounded louder to me.

Dave killed me in S0 and I think I finished 7th out of 8th today but Matt did super finishing 6th in M2 in my car. No he didn't spin out not even once!! Full depth tread tires just don't quite make it BUT my new Toyo's are better than the expensive Michelin PSS's for 1/2 the money and grippier.

The scores are up all ready. Awesome.

I even got some sun today or maybe windburn?

Thanks ALL. A really fun time upsetting day. Who are all these people showing up now?

Doug

Always fun to watch a 50 ur old machine race.

Loved the course, couldn't find enough grip. Wish I had more runs because I was over thinking the course. I'll be out for while until I get new tires and onto the next Sunday event.

Thanks guys!

Awesome course today, I really enjoyed it! Tough competition though, going to have to pick up my game. Here's my best run, good enough for 4th in S0 and 15th overall.

This was loads of fun.

Thanks to Cap'n Kirk Endsley for indulging my nostalgia about my old Honda Civic sedan and being a fine grid co-worker. Our run group was complicated, but we got the cars out without delay and kept it moving.

Philip showed us how an under-prepared car and talented driver can kick some serious tail. Please tell me there's video of that run.

I got my ass handed me to by a well-driven Festiva. Goodness.

What's really weird is that a course that the Festiva was clearly limited by its ability to accelerate (we were literally flat out almost everywhere), which would seem like an obvious "power course" and put us at a disadvantage, turned out to somehow be a "FASTiva-friendly course".

The only theory I can come up with is that a faster car could get up enough speed to enter a lot of turns too fast, which was a problem we did not have.

Wait a sec... I don't need to be making excuses!

Great times had by all... well, some had better times than others, but fun certainly had by all.

Don't think I can wait til March for new tires; at 135+ runs the Hankooks are cooked :o . Add to that their love of heat to function at their best and right now you get... nada. Even if it is just in my head, the end result is less than satisfying. This is now the 3rd event I've had limited grip; Tavares a few weeks ago was a joke, enjoyable as most AX events are, but ridiculous as far as traction.

Somehow, between now and the Enduro, I will have to find a day I can get new tires slapped on.

Oh, BTW, if anyone remembers were I got the 2 cones in my last run, please let me know. I went through the finish lights thinking I had been clean. I know where I coned runs 1 & 3, and how I DNF-ed the 2nd (total brain fart at the entry of the last slalom and correcting for it would have likely spun me.... waaaaayyyy too close to the finish timing light, upsetting Ron on what otherwise turned into a fabulous day for him and becoming the "That Guy Du Jour" I can't find the hits in the video. Hopefully that means I just nudged them out of place which I'm fine with 'cause that means I'm pushing it, but I gotta know or my brain will nag me for hours.

Another great event. I somehow just couldn't find my groove on this course, but I had fun anyway. I think the most fun I had all day was riding along in my car with Phillip Petrie at the wheel. He was much better able to take advantage of the extra power than I. And he did it in a sort of surreal controlled chaos sort of way. He ran a 39 something the first time in my car on a first run on this course. Wow.

That was a fun day, working on getting the pictures sorted a soon as I can. I really liked the course and it liked my car! This is my cars first top 5 overall :D Shocks and brakes are overrated.

That was a blast! I Think my time was a 39.09X. It felt like it had the right level of power to tire grip for maximum fun.

No video of that run, the suction mount failed on the way up to the line. I really wish I had that on video. It seem like all my favorite runs are never on video.

This was my dirty ( +1 ) 39.168. My line was the same in my 37.9 run but the turnaround was a completely different line ( wider and less crashy and didn't bog in 2nd ) and I didn't lift on the return side until the slalom.

Philip, you did outstanding yesterday. The turnaround was critical to a quick run, glad you found the line. Holding third gear without lifting made a world of difference too. The return kept biting me, not the slalom, but missing the up-shift. I should have just found a good spot to up-shift and drive to the finish.

Congrats again, Joe

Pretty much what Ben was saying as he was watching you fumble your downshifts over there. :thumbwink:

Looks like we've found the answer to "how did Philip drive that course so fast?"

Thanks, I was amazed how much speed I could carry with a wide line in the turnaround. I figure that was at worth at least 0.700 and the rest was just a better run back to the finish.
