4/9 Post Event

Well, well, well. First post event post. Jamie and Dat make Stock class look good. I had hoped to carve another half second off my best time, but wasn't up to the task. Lots of fun today, see everyone again in two weeks.

Okay, that course was super fun! I do believe I need to get Doug Adams to drive my car next time, though. I didn't know my "shithouse" was in such high demand!

42.306 on 5th run. Was a challenging course. I had FTD with my first run but I didn't do the outside loop which I learned was worth 7 seconds. Gerry, shithouses are what most of us drive very quickly. You get a lot out of that econobox and won class yet again. Loren is trying to set a benchmark with the Fastiva. He beat me I think for the first time. I bearly beat Ben by a whisker. Special thanks to Tony, Ken and Sam for fearing the Big Kahuna Hawiian Shirt today. A really good day for everyone.

Isn't it funny how a simple "back to basics" kind of course can flummox so many people? I was STUNNED by the cone count today. Y'all need more slalom practice!

Man, does that shoe fit. I was in the zone in the morning and just couldn't put it together in the afternoon. The slaloms kicked my butt. I loved the skid pad turn around. That was the only part that I still nailed in my afternoon runs. Thanks to all who made this a great event.

Isn't it funny how a simple "back to basics" kind of course can flummox so many people? I was STUNNED by the cone count today.

4+ people ran over marker cones in Grid driving to the start but I didn't have the heart to call them as penalties. Even Jamie clipped one.

Today was fantastic! Thanks to all who helped out, in any and every way. Teamwork makes the dream work, right?!

We can say that "every" runway event is just one long slalom out and slalom back, but clearly the beast that is slalom has many forms. We played with 4 of them today, simply coned, and yeah, a pure slalom takes a LOT of practice to get right. I was never in good form on all 4 at once (especially the last sequence), and the rides I took with others I saw the same issue - "attack the back" is not as easy to do as it is fun to say.

So, lots of downed slalom cones aside, let's not overlook the skidpad. Many folks drove that 2, 3, even 4 feet off the cones, which adds significant distance (and time). Not too many cone hits, though...

I hit no cones today, but had someone ask me if a was purposely "hopping" them! I wish I was that good.

Even on a decent day, beating Ron and John I wound up fifth in class and 33rd out of 89 drivers. (Seven people in front of me were FN class, but most of those beat me in competitive time too.)

It was a fun course but I backed off in a couple places I didn't need to. I'm trying to retire from being farmer Bob's assistant, but some others stepped up today to make sure we keep American agriculture alive. Unfortunately using equipment developed in Japan.

I am so thankful for the slaloms that bit my competitors, I could not win without their help. More slaloms in the future please, decreasing interval, offset, acceleration zone between, all kinds of diabolical.

Aside from the usual event awesomeness - I want to thank the many instructors who were visibly compelled to walk across the complete grid, possibly all the way from the trailer, to give me tips on improving my slalom - left the day much better than ever expected for it, free of agricultural ornaments as well.

Already looking forward to the next dog track event!

I won't deny for a second that my usual MO for designing a course is to make it easy enough to follow, but intentionally difficult to find "the right line" through. But, this course... I specifically designed to be SIMPLE and EASY. And you can ask Drew and Steve... when we did final setup on it, we tweaked things to make it even EASIER.

Reminds me, I need to post the course for the next event.

I just want to thank you guys, I had a blast yesterday! FAST never fails to put on a great event! I managed to put up a 43.150sec time in M3 class before my stock tires decided to give up all traction!! [emoji53] anxiously waiting for someone up post pictures.

So, my driving in the morning session was much better than usual. My best time was good enough to earn a third place sticker in M2. That's a first for me. I then went on to totally suck in the afternoon. I couldn't come close to my morning times without killing at least one cone, and I couldn't figure out what had changed. After reviewing my videos from the event, it's much more clear. I remembered to turn on the GoPro for every run except my worst afternoon run, in which I killed three cones. But I have my best and my second worst.

The main difference I see is the slaloms. I did a halfway decent job of backsiding the cones on my best run, but there's still room for improvement. My slower run shows what happened when I let the cones get ahead of me. I think the difference is most apparent in the final slalom. I entered wrong, couldn't get behind the cones, and took out the third cone. I was able to carry much more speed when I got the rhythm right. I also see where I could have picked up more time on the figure 8 turn around in both runs. I could have been a lot tighter to the cones, especially on the left hand turn portion.

Y'all let me know what else you see that I can improve.

Hard to tell from the videos, but are you full throttle between the slalom sections? The sections between the slalom groups should be areas of hard/full acceleration. I try to set up each section for a good exit so I can get on the gas early and hard. A lot of it is positioning the car so you can get on the gas early.

It certainly had it's moments.. I liked the exit of the turn around for it's patience needed.. I ended up working corner 3 and the folks that got on Gas too early pushed wide and got punished on that next slalom (which was more straight away if you entered correctly)

This was a really fun event, the figure eight should show up more often. Don't be too critical of the video, it was my worst run (after penalties). I had camera trouble for the better runs I am looking forward to photos though.
