Hard to tell from the videos, but are you full throttle between the slalom sections? The sections between the slalom groups should be areas of hard/full acceleration. I try to set up each section for a good exit so I can get on the gas early and hard. A lot of it is positioning the car so you can get on the gas early.
I'm with Dat. I know your car is supercharged, which means it would be pretty evident if you WERE full throttle between the slaloms. You're not. I'll take it a step further and say that you're simply not slaloming hard enough. BUT... as the saying goes "line first, then speed". Get to where you can consistently find the rythm of the slalom and get used to the feel of being "ahead" with your slalom inputs (your morning runs) rather than "behind" with your inputs and trying to catch up (your late runs). Once you have that, it's much easier to add some speed.

Listen to your tires. Particularly on your fast run. They are silent until you hit the first section of the figure 8*. With a typical street tire, that light squeal is your signal that you are nearing the limit. If you're not hearing it, you're NOT near the limit! In a slalom, you should hear "chirp, chirp, chirp" at each turn if you're hitting that slalom perfectly. If you're not hearing that at least some of the time, you could be slaloming faster.

* -- Actually, they're silent until you over-brake at the turn-in for the figure 8. No tire noise on that left... could have been faster there! And then all the way around the right, you're just chirping here and there rather than a consistent light squeal. On the left, you're almost overdriving it... the tires are beyond a "squeal" and getting into a "squall". The "fast slalom" you should be flat out through if you're on-line... and if you're not, it should be because you're actually reaching the limit of the tires somewhere. Again, no tire noise there... and you're not full-throttle through it. Time left on the table.

You're certainly making progress, though. :thumbwink:

Edit: Watch Kirk's video. He may or may not be driving any better than you, and he doesn't have tires that are as grippy as yours... but listen to his tires. He is reaching and generally not exceeding the limit of his tires much more than you are. If you were more at the limit of your tires (and accelerating more where you could), you could have been a LOT faster on this course.

Better still, if you backtrack that line of thought... if you went a little wide on the first half of the second (left) loop of the figure 8 and focused on a "late apex" somewhere on the far side, you could set up for late apex and get on the gas really early through that entry to the fast slalom. Oh, yes, there was time to be had there!

"The most important turn on any course is the one before the longest straight." That fast slalom was the closest thing to a straight on this course, speed through there was the best place to improve your time... so the exit of figure 8 was the most critical turn on the course.

Dunno? I thought my interpretation of the "alternate loop" with no pointer cones was correct and netted me a 36 second FTD for about 30 seconds with a passenger on my first run. Don't laugh I've won many serious old time events with my ability to read a course differently than other "racers". Now even the National courses are layed out for Sissy's. Pointer cones everywhere and to scale maps in advance with extra wide striped lanes....seriously? The only variable is rain. Good old "kick ass" rain.

Looking at your fastest run, you were way, way, way off the cone circle in the turnaround. Even more so on the exit to the figure-8 -- that was much more than Loren's suggestion to loosen the exit. And on the last slalom, it wasn't apparent whether you braked much to get around the tight spot in the middle. If you didn't have to brake, you weren't entering fast enough!
RedBRZ80 wrote:...the folks that got on Gas too early pushed wide and got punished on that next slalom (which was more straight away if you entered correctly)
Yes...I owned that a few times. Could feel time piling on while I reeled the car back onto a decent line!

Great shots! That cone got a workout.

Here is my best clean run:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUsGZPsrG1M

I messed up the turnaround in one way or another every run. Pushed too hard in and was way late to the throttle on the way out. I did it right once but the rest of that run wasn't good.

Also big thanks to Dan for filming my boat car.

I think I'd have been a half-second faster if I could have nailed the braking for that final slalom as well as Philip did. Just the perfect little stab in just the right place, scrubbing off just enough speed to barely get through there and accelerate through the finish. I always made it a point to play it safe through there, braking a little early and slowing down more than necessary.

(yes, the FASTiva could have easily been in the 41's... aren't you glad I don't let Philip drive it?)

Great weather, great people and a great course. To bad the driver of my car wasn't up to it, my car sure was.

I was so flustered I left my grey fold up chair and broken tube of sunscreen in front of the trailer. Anyone pick them up?

I we had 3 chairs at the end of the day. 2 of them are grey. I think they are in the trailer.

My fastest run, 40.634, .015 behind Drew. Fun day once I got some heat in my rear tires. The fastest part for me was just before the turn around, just touched the rev limiter.

Blue_Heron wrote:So, my driving in the morning session was much better than usual. My best time was good enough to earn a third place sticker in M2. That's a first for me. I then went on to totally suck in the afternoon. I couldn't come close to my morning times without killing at least one cone, and I couldn't figure out what had changed. After reviewing my videos from the event, it's much more clear. I remembered to turn on the GoPro for every run except my worst afternoon run, in which I killed three cones. But I have my best and my second worst.

Best - 41.865
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1NbQT3 ... e=youtu.be

(almost) Worst - 43.588+1
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKjaCP3 ... e=youtu.be

The main difference I see is the slaloms. I did a halfway decent job of backsiding the cones on my best run, but there's still room for improvement. My slower run shows what happened when I let the cones get ahead of me. I think the difference is most apparent in the final slalom. I entered wrong, couldn't get behind the cones, and took out the third cone. I was able to carry much more speed when I got the rhythm right. I also see where I could have picked up more time on the figure 8 turn around in both runs. I could have been a lot tighter to the cones, especially on the left hand turn portion.

Y'all let me know what else you see that I can improve.

David- the second half of the figure 8 you should have been closer on the left, would have set you up slightly better to get back on gas, the slalom after the turnaround was the "money" spot where it was basically (with a quick lift )on entry a flat out section. But solid job on the top 3 finish. Keeping up with Drew is tough business.
