Split the case...and no defects noted! Good because my work was a success (for 400 miles)...bad because I still have the noise unless I can find something definitive.

The driverside cylinder head is last suspect...I'll have it fully disassembled and inspected.

Great news...for $50 the machine shop (United Speed/North Tampa) said nothing wrong with anything including the cylinder head!

Bad news...don't know what was making the noise.

Timing belt tensioners have been known to mimic a similar sound as a rod bearing...a new one will go on...again.

But likely it will sit idle while I take a siesta overseas for a few months.

Maybe need higher Octane Or new knock sensor? I was just reading about how those things work using low frequencies-interesting.

Octane? The Subaru is already at 8.2 to 1 CR...should be able to run it on kerosene...without a turbo though.

Yes M1 didn't get much competition from this participant. Sometimes that is the way it works out.

Trip: May be a chance for a *Ring* lap so all is not lost...see if I can addict Jamie's son to the adrenaline rush.

I had one valve tipped on the Cosworth heads as the lash was too tight...Subaru doesn't offer a shim small enough. They did it for free so I'll give that machine shop some more business.

Find it fascinating when people have the skill to do a rebuild of an engine in there garage. I hope one day I will be able to go that deep into the car. Deepest I've gone was just taking off the Valve cover . Btw did you ever find out what was causing the ticking sound on the new engine?

Daniel: We all start somewhere...I put a new air cleaner on my 69 Nova and wanted more nearly 30 years ago...

Ticking sound: not exactly. I have suspicions although no critical parts were suspect-rod bearings. So replaced a number of parts and will turn it to 8000 rpm and see if it blows. Then hit Daytona on 30 Sep...come let that Mitsu eat on the high banks!

Progress is slow...had to repair our house AC, irrigation sprung a leak, and my Mini's failed water-pump. Takes enthusiasm away from the Sububaru!

Trans is on the way home...Tuesday delivery.

Very clean and minimal wear...syncros, bearings, shift forks replaced along with rear transfer bearings at my request due to a vibration issue.

Also picked up my refinished (powder coated) wheels. 191,000 miles resulted in various dings, chips, and some small curb rash. The shop did a bang up job for $450 for the set. Slightly darker silver...I chose the lightest they offered. Also mounted up fresh set of Rival S tires.



I took advantage of the down time and had the front knuckles powder coated as well...fresh wheel bearings and even replaced the hub finally (was original).



May get the engine finished tomorrow. I'm not looking forward to install that trans myself...I'm going to try to install as a unit (engine/trans) like a domestic car. That trans is heavy!

Success...break in during Hurricane Hermine...8 miles, 14 psi boost, 5500 rpm...didn't blow up...yet:



Note, nearly all the engine parts have 400 miles on them...just reassembled. I had never exceeded 4000 rpm previously nor 5 psi boost.

Will get an alignment tomorrow (new front wheel bearings) and put some miles on it in preparation for chassis dyno...see it will survive 25 psi boost and 8000 rpm.

Additionally, the rebuilt trans worked like advertised. Haven't tested the 82 / 130 mph vibration thus far.

That ONLY works with old Mustangs with the Radio as parts fall off.

I learned yesterday. George B moved from a Z51 vette to a '16 Miata due to impacting two wall at Daytona. Fortunately he bought track insurance there!! He has young kids.

I learned today after Sunday's Curb clamity: Greg S. who put his BRZ into a curb at Orlando cannot find a rear end for his car and still owes money on it. SHIT. They were taking that car to Lincoln, NE. SHIT.

I'll rent one of the track's "trick" cars instead of finding out if my "vert" can do advertised top end.

My days are numbered if you need a "trick" stock RX-8 or a "quality" winning C5. Talk to me. Or PM me. Looks like I'll be running two classes in FAST this year no matter what. There is no urgency "yet". I know my limits. My wife knows my age.

Thanks. Honestly, the Subaru was quite a bit more complex-lots of puzzle pieces to put together. Then you miss one and have to undue what you just did. It runs on hoses too...I should count how many...of course they have all turned to plastic so that is a pretty penny at Subaru.

Up to 300 miles on it now...plus the original 400.

Vortex did a bang up job on the alignment. Squeezed -2.0 out of the front. Most I've gotten...no issues with the visit and still recommend them for a $150 alignment.

Dyno appointment is 16 Sep.

Over 1000 miles...installed an AFR gauge to confirm not going lean...took it to 7000 rpm at 21 psi...it didn't scatter!

Great news...on a somber day.



Dyno is Friday...made 330 WHP on a Mustang AWD setup previously. I hope for a sizeable jump with the up pipe, heads, fresh engine, and request for bump of 3 psi boost.





Also added an Intake Air Temperature sensor relocation bung...from the MAF (pre turbo) to the intercooler (post turbo)...obviously much better data for a turbo engine closer to edge of explosion.
