FAST School - Oct 22 @ Brooksville

Postby Loren » Sun Oct 09, 2016 2:25 pm

Time to get registered for the school!

Register Here

It's time for that annual FAST Autocross School! We're doing it a little differently this time, using a format that's not unlike what we've done at some of our Classic events where we included a "practice element". It's going to be a little more casual than past schools, and NOT a true "novice school". We're not inviting first-time autocrossers. The target here is people who have been autocrossing with FAST for a little while. We want to take those people who are already "hooked", and help them learn to be faster! And "instructors" instead of just being there as instructors, will also be doing the practice exercises WITH the students, which allows them to do some additional "demonstration" in their own cars, as well as a little "test and tune" in their own cars to sharpen their own skills. Oh, and we'll be doing timed baseline and end-of-day runs on a full course. Should be a win-win for everybody with 5-6 timed runs, focused practice elements, and lunch!

The practice elements and the course itself will be very similar to what we've done at recent schools. Just the format of the event will be different.
  • Y'all know the drill. Same participation rules as every other Brooksville FAST event.
  • We'll start by inviting newish, but active members to be "student participants".
  • We'll also be inviting qualified "instructor participants".
  • We're planning on a maximum of 32 students and 16 instructors. Split into 4 run groups. That's 4 instructors for each group of 8 students.
  • Plan on the whole day -- the event will run from approximately 7:00am - 5:00pm.
  • It will be a busy day for all, but it will be a lot of fun, and you WILL learn some things!
Uh, What's The Deal?
  • All participants will get two preliminary timed runs, and 4 timed runs at the end of the day.
  • All participants will work course some.
  • All will rotate through three practice exercises.
  • All will partake of the World Famous FAST Lunch, along with water and sodas.
  • Unlike our past schools, we don't have "volunteers" paid or otherwise. Everyone is a participant, this helps us keep the cost down for the "students", and "instructors" are getting a deeply discounted rate for their own seat time and lunch in exchange for focusing much of their time on teaching.

Hmm, would I be qualified to instruct? I don't even mind if I drive my car or not, but to be able to come hang out, eat, possibly drive someone else's car and help give some insight for that cheap sounds like an ideal day for me. Let me know, thanks!

Perfect! Is there a way to sign up as an instructor? The only options for me right now are "guest" and "student"

Ah, you weren't flagged with the member type of "instructor". You should have the instructor option now.

If anyone else wants to instruct, feels qualified to instruct, and finds they also don't have the instructor option, let me know! Most people who we allow to instruct have been marked as an "instructor".

Yes, my advice to whoever I'm teaching will be to listen to Lorens secrets and buy a set of re71rs :rolling: Really though we'll see, I always get too far into my own head to be able to give good advice on points days. I'm looking forward to seeing how I can help a noob or two when the focus is off my own times.

A school is mostly all about focusing on the basics. I'm sure you can handle it! We'll email out some info to the instructors before the event.

Only 7 days left to register for the school! So far, we're about half way there, and we have a good (2:1) student:instructor ratio going.

No way I will get up that early. OR afford to pay to run. OR need any more practice.

I could get there by noonish? I looked at the results and saw I finished in the top 1/3 OA with an S2 car with 4 year old tires (good old ones) at TBD. Normal finish.

So if you run short of instructors I will show up and tell them how to beat the Mayor (?) or how I learned to breathe (suck wind) while driving? Like Loren says it's all about "sucking less" AND beating The Mayor and the FASTIVA of course. AND having fun.

The last item is my "thing".

Yes! You've got "it"
And, not the kind of "it" that you see a doctor to get rid of.

The WRX was invented for water and mud!

I've just started reviewing the school plan. Cleaning things up for the revised format. Should have things ready to email out to instructors and students by the close of registration on Monday.

Not me
I'm in and can't wait to get some more seat time. I'm almost as excited as I was two years ago for my very first experience of Autocross at the FAST school.

For those still on the fence - follow the Nike rule - Just Do It!! I had a blast last time as a true novice and really looking forward to some more advanced tuition this time around.
