Trailer fix-it day

Postby Native » Wed Oct 16, 2013 10:15 pm

So the trailer needs a little TLC - floor, lights, better packing markings, maybe some other stuff as we go over it - and Loren, Ryan and I are gonna get together in St. Pete to take care of it all on Sunday, Oct. 27th.

We'd like a fourth person to help out. We haven't pinned down times yet, but probably start around 10 or so and go til we're done. Of course, it's a FAST event so we'll probably have lunch!

Anyway, if you'd like to work the trailer with us raise your hand. Oh, there's that lunch and 2 events credits for your trouble...

The trailer and (and lots of the stuff in it) is officially fixed!

I'm going to post some trailer photos in a bit, just for reference.

Here's what I remember of what we accomplished today:
  • Replaced the rotten wood by the rear door with 3/4" pressure treated plywood, painted the bottom.
  • Added additional support under center of the replaced floor.
  • Killed a spider.
  • Repaired the light wiring.
  • Replaced burned out bulbs.
  • Painted new lines and labels on the floor to aid in loading.
  • Checked wheel bearings.
  • Fixed and did preventive maintenance on flags.
  • Changed generator oil.
  • Added lips to front shelves to help hold things on them.
  • Added cargo net to lower front shelf.
  • Reinforced the fold-down table to prevent further warpage.
  • Fixed timer antenna PVC stand.
  • Bought some more metal folding chairs.
  • Inspected and disinfected helmets, disposed of the really old ones. (current inventory: 2-XL, 2-L, 3-M, 1-S, 1-XS)
  • Added another storage tube for flags.
  • Counted cones (roughly 270 regular, 20 small orange, 20 small red, 8 regular green, 4 tall green).
  • Cleaned permanent marker off of white board.
  • Cleaned stuff, pitched trash, and reloaded everything.
  • Other stuff that I've forgotten.

^^^ yes, when Matt stomped it (sorry, greenies...) he said the "pop" was uglier than the spider itself. It was a monster. Makes me wonder what it was eating in the trailer...

We also remarked the coolers and bins to make the labels more readable, also to aid loading.
We packed all the paper products and utensils in a bin.
Inspected the trailer hitch and wheelstand (all good).
Aired the tires, spare included.
Fixed the slightly bent window frame so it'll close easier now.
Swept it all out. Twice.
Had the slowest service in Sonny's history.
Laundered all the vests. We have 14 of them. All clean.
Found a radio.

It was a beautiful day for this - thank goodness we held off and didn't do this in August. Huge thanks to Ryan, Matt and Brian - y'all were very helpful. Very much appreciated!

So, here's kinda what things look like:
Image

And some more photos in a gallery. They're really just reference photos for when we wonder about what something looks like and don't want to go dig the trailer out of storage to find the answer.

Trailer Gallery

This would also be a good time for anyone who knows anything about the trailer to share what they know. We'll make this a "reference" thread.

For instance:
The trailer bearings have grease fittings for easy maintenance. (unknown when they were last greased)

Anybody remember what the wheel size and bolt pattern is?

(I got a photo of the tire size)

That explains why I saw the trailer heading north on Belcher yesterday.

I dug up the paperwork from when I replaced those tires last September.

205/75R 15C 5 bolt

Doesn't specify lug pattern, although it's either 4.5 or 5 inches. Easy enough to measure.
Tires came pre-mounted, so the wheel is what it is. We could splurge on chrome instead of white next time... or we could be totally rad and plasti-dip them flat black... :o

...and they weren't cheap so we need to keep a close eye on the air pressures.

Probably a 114.3mm (4.5 inch) circle, then.

nah, that's the pattern on my GTI - we were joking about putting those wheels on the trailer.

Jamie and Charles are probably right.

I guess I'll dust off this thread.

We did a little trailer maintenance at the last event. Really, more cleaning and inventory than maintenance. I think we still have some leaks that we're going to need to deal with at some point, and we'll eventually have some repair work to do as a result of said leakage.

The roof of the trailer is also getting a healthy coat of green mold. Ugh.

We purged a bunch of old ratty cones, and this is what was left:
129 Good Cones
74 Usable (iffy) Cones
28 short red cones
34 short orange cones
8 green cones
6 tall green cones
6 tall orange cones (new)

We'll be ordering some new cones that we hope to have in service for January.

And lastly, Generator maintenance was done by Drew this morning. New spark plug and fresh engine oil. Started on the first pull, as usual.

Trailer fix-it day

Postby Loren » Thu Nov 17, 2016 1:22 pm

This seems like the best place to put trailer info.

As of today, we have two new tires (and the spare was replaced a few months ago), and new wheel bearings. Should be good for a few years in that department.

FYI, we do have a standard 3500 lb axle that uses the standard "available everywhere" bearings.

We should probably do the generator maintenance again in December.
