Perfect Run Autocross - May 21 @ Brooksville

Postby Loren » Fri Apr 28, 2017 11:28 pm

The perfect run. It is our eternal quest. Every humble autocrosser knows that it cannot be achieved. Try as we might, we'll get one part of a course nearly perfect, and make some small mistake somewhere else. Putting it ALL together in one run? It never happens. Even the National Champions can tell you where they made their mistakes or could have gone a little faster. There's always more time out there.

This event will give you a course that is split into 5 segments. You'll get to run each segment individually to get a "perfect run" on each segment. Then you'll get to compare the sum of your perfect segments to your time on the full course.

More details on the Registration Page! Get registered before it fills up!
  • This Special Event requires at least 3 events of experience.
  • Registration is limited to 36 drivers.
  • Pre-registration is required for all Drivers AND Guests.
  • At Brooksville, we can't let anyone in the gate if they are not on the entry list.
  • The World Famous FAST Lunch is included!

Interesting fact about that virtual car, the interior was based on my reference photos of my car.

I have a feeling you're still a faster driver than me even if you turn in too early. ;-)

Perfect Run Autocross - May 21 @ Brooksville

Postby Loren » Thu May 04, 2017 1:23 am

This event is rapidly approaching. There are 12 openings left. I thought it might be good to talk about it a little more here before pushing it to Facebook. Why? Because we always like to see our Special Events filled with our regulars rather than by random people we've never seen before and might never see again. You're why we do these things!

So... I want to be sure everyone understands what this event is, and how unique it is.

First, what it is:

We have a full course designed. It's a pretty typical Brooksville course. We've divided that course into 5 segments, and we'll be running each segment separately. You'll do maybe 5-6 runs on each segment, allowing you to focus on JUST that segment and getting it right. Then we'll take your best time on each segment, and the sum of those times will be your Perfect Run time. We'll finish by doing some runs of the full course (as many as we have time for) so that you can compare your actual best time to your theoretical best time.

The only place I've ever seen anyone do a segmented course is at one of the big autocross schools. It's pretty unusual. It's a little bit of a pain to do. But, in addition to being fun and different, you could learn a lot from it!

The 5 segments of the course (I'll post the map next week) will be:
The Launch - The first 200' of the course, includes a little wiggle. Are you getting too much wheelspin? Too much bog? Missing your 2nd gear shift? Here's were you can find out. The launch is the only segment that is timed from a stop. Remaining elements will get a flying start from about 200' before the start of the element.
The Slalom - A straight, no offset, no tricks, simple, 60' spaced, 7-cone slalom. Even if you don't master it, I bet you'll find some improvement on it!
The Turn-Around - Pretty basic 100' diameter half-circle. Includes the entry and braking zone. You can work on getting your braking right, getting the ENTRY just right, setting your arc just right, and carrying maximum speed through it.
The Dig - This is the exit of the turn-around with a nice little kink. Let's say you nailed the turn-around. (this element starts AFTER that, so you get a nice straight and fast run up to it... as if you nailed the turn-around) How's your hole-shot? How good are you at carrying momentum through that kink and getting on the gas early? We shall see.
The Dreaded Chicago Box - This gives you a fast straight leading into a 50' spaced Chicago box (essentially, a 50' 3-cone slalom), more straight, and through the finish. How good are you at the fast and intimidating needle-threading stuff? Is pucker a factor for you?

And that's it. 5 simple segments. Maybe 8-10 seconds each? We aim to do at least 5-6 runs on each segment. We've never done this before, so we don't know how quickly it will flow. (should go pretty quickly, but you never know) If it flies... maybe we'll do 8 runs on each? Whatever we can get away with.

The segments are similar to what we do for a school, but at a school, we don't time them. Your "results" of each segment are purely subjective based on what you or your instructor "feel". This won't be a "school" in that we're not going to have instructors or formal instruction. But, with the combination of "school exercises" and segment times, the opportunity for learning is huge! And if enough "newish" people sign up, we may do a bit of a brief "chalk talk" before each segment with some tips on how to drive it, mistakes to watch for, etc.

Are you registered yet??? Only 12 spots remain. You should take one of them.

I felt like I had to register, since I'm in the event pic and all... Does that mean I get to drive Ron's car too?

That also means there's only 2 slots left for anyone on the fence!

Now that you mention it, since we've decided to save the FASTiva for points events just to be sure we don't have issue getting through the season, I don't actually have a car to drive, either! If anyone would like a co-driver (who is apparently faster than Ben?), lemme know.

Just one entry left.

And I'm still in need of a ride. Doesn't even need to be a "full ride". I might just do a couple runs on each segment just to get a time. I miiiiiight do it with the truck, but I'm still not sure that I should. (one way to find out, I guess)

Great opportunity to learn from Ben and Loren. In my situation, Steve assured me that if anything happened with him codriving, we'd go directly to the Fastiva Garage

Status of my current tuning progress... Too many failed start attempts after adjustments to the timing map in the idle zone. I switched back to what I had before, but the battery just didn't have the powah!Image

They have more torque than the FASTiva but less than your truck.
