I'll let everybody know when the engine arrives. I've asked some people who've done it before if they have any information to share, so hopefully I'll get a list of tips and things to watch out for. I'm hoping to have most of it done over a weekend.

I think the main thing I need right now is tools. I'm going to go get an engine stand tonight (assuming I can get out of work on time) and probably will go buy a new socket set tomorrow (I have no deep-wells).

I know that my full exhaust won't mate up right away. A version 9 JDM twin-scroll downpipe is the same length as the USDM DP, but the version 8's and previous are shorter. I'm looking around for a non-catted version anyways, so we'll see what happens there. If all else fails, I just hook up the short one and fire it up with an open downpipe to see if it runs. I can get A-1 exhaust to make a short adapter pipe if needed.

When can I come by and pick it up?

Things are starting to come together. The clutch, flywheel, and engine/trans mounts arrived yesterday. They tried to deliver the engine earlier this afternoon, but the shipping company neglected to tell me that there was no lift gate on the truck. There was no way he driver and I could get the 250+ pound pallet off the 4' high back of the truck. They said they would send a lift gate truck by later this evening.

The new radiator is on its way, as is the twin-scroll flange I ordered that can be welded onto a USDM bellmouth downpipe to make it made up to the VF-36.

Just give me a call when you have time to get it and we'll see what my plans are, etc.

727-417-6954

PS: This weekend is a bust and tonight before 8PM is a bust, but I am up until 11-12 without fail.

PPS: I have an engine hoist too, but you're going to need a truck to pick that up if you need it.

Kenny, I've swapped a bunch of WRX'en in my day usually due to large failures, had to do one on my back in the dirt. keep in mind to leave all the accessories connected to the car AC/PS etc. since the old stuff will bolt up to the new engine without much fuss. this is a weekend job. experienced guys can do it in an afternoon. no real reason to need an engine stand since you just pulling a junk one out and installing a new one. unless you want to tear apart the old one at your leasure.

put the "gut of the oil pan in a tire" that way there is no weight on the pan, and two semi strong 20 somethings can move a subie engine no problem.

most importantly don't complicate the job. pull radiator, grill and bumper if you want better access to the front of the car, when mating a engine with clutch installed it can be a bear to line up, have faith, and push harder then you ever thought you would have to, and rock a lot. they will go together. and once you get the rocking and pushing down you'll go "that was easy"

Now that all the parts have arrived, and the guy who was going to help me get started today had a work emergency so plans had to change, its time for some pictures.

Some of you may remember I said the oil filter had all kinds of metal in it. I took a picture for your viewing pleasure. The big splotch to the right of the skin is from draining the oil out of the filter as I was cutting. The oil pan contains so much more of that.

Part 1 of the new parts:

Part 2 of the new parts:

The version 8 JDM STi Spec C engine:

No tumble generators! A nice smooth intake manifold, just like jblaine has on his car:

Intercooler size comparison:

The VF-36 turbo... ball bearing twin scroll awesomeness:

Blurry picture of its turbine outlet and wastegate:

It came with a JDM bellmouth downpipe, but its about 3 inches shorter than what I have on there currently. Since the twin scrolls have a different bolt pattern on the turbine housing, I ordered a flange that I can either have a custom downpipe fabbed to, or buy a USDM bellmouth and have them cut off the flange and weld the new one on. Or just have an exhaust shop make a short pipe, or see if I can swing my catback forward to mate up.

More details as they emerge.

Just a little bit, Brian. A tiny bit.

I've got some info about the wiring, and the guy who's shop I'm going to use isn't available until Saturday, so I'm going to try and get all the wiring done, maybe install the Walbro. I'm still struggling with that damn inlet hose, though. I can't figure out how the heck we did it in the first place on my WRX 2L. Driving me crazy!

As much as I would love to (seriously), $1200 is a little much for right now.

Jeff, do you happen to have the tool that supposedly can remove ECU and wiring harness pins? Or spare pins? I've gotta do this wiring for the AVCS and need to add 4 pins to one of the ECU plugs and to a harness.

Kenny, you willing to part with your stock WRX injectors, I need a set to run the Green Grand Prix next month so I need to run E85 and the WRX injector is exactly .33% bigger and should offer me the perfect amount of headroom.

Assuming the engine is out by then, sure. You take off the Green Brackets of Death, though :p

That's fine they say not to remove the rail while the manafold is on my car too but i's easier to fight the rail then need to replace the gasket.

Sounds like someone needs to set up a group buy. Then we can all afford it.

At this point, Rydell, if I were going to go with something that cost $1200, I'd probably do a carbon fiber driveshaft.

Microupdate: The engine is disconnected and is ready to remove. We decided to call it a night. Plan for tomorrow, get it out first thing, install new engine/trans mounts, clutch, flywheel, mate up transmission, get it back into the hole. I'll come in Thursday and Friday and start hooking things back up.

Assuming all goes well, maybe I can start it on Friday. Then I go on vacation (in a bloody rental... BLEH) for 10 days.

My money is going toward wheels and tires. I could probably change to an STI stearing rack and make a big improvement for a ton less cash.

I'd stick with the wheels and tires in your case.
