So today I learned:
If your name is Jason you won by at least half a second.
My tires are done.
My car smokes, a lot. I think the engine wasn't up to temp on this run (#1) so it was a bit rich.

Had a lot of fun yesterday, despite the heat sapping wind and I thoroughly enjoyed the rhythm of the course.
Forgot to check tire pressure before the event, but did check just before the first run and was at 34f and 36r when I normally have them at 39f 43r. It felt better than usual despite the cold concrete, until they heated up when they felt normal again. My car doesn't have a lot of camber and I have 255's on an 8" rim so I get a lot of rollover. But man, with that amount of grip it's tempting to lower it a bit. I'm thinking that the rs4 handles lower pressure better than the rs3. Need to get out to Joe's to get some camber love.
Thanks to the guy in the Miata for letting me test out their GoPro remote (Bruce, I think?), it was cool and I will be picking one up.
Here is my quickest lap - 39.812 good for 2nd in Pax.

Bill! We were 6/100s apart - well done!
Now do it again.
The "middle ground" on that rear suspension is pretty good. Still willing to help turn, but not all the way around.
Was a terrific event, other than the obvious weather. I'll brag about the 40.4 I ran in Ron's car during the course test first thing in the morning. Every once in a while, I really nail one! Have I mentioned I like that twitchy, low-clutched hoopty?
The food was great, the people are great, the videos are great, and I'm looking forward to the next one.
LOST AND FOUND:
We keep accumulating chairs. We will not keep them forever.
And to the person who left a really nice vintage bike:
I have it (not in the trailer).
You know who you are. Please let me know which event you'll attend next and I'll bring it back.

Push Harder - Drive as close to the limit of your tires as possible.
Suck Less - Drive something resembling a proper racing line.

Full disclosure - I could swear I hit a cone on that 39.9 run but nobody called it in so I let it go... Since Philip hit a cone on his 40.2 my phantom cone wouldn't have changed the class results so I let it ride.
This is going to sound stupid and obvious, but I think printing out the map and studying it the day before the event really helped me this time. Usually the plans I make during the course walk fly out the window by the time I get in the car, but I held on to most of it this time.
Things I concentrated on this time:
- Winding out first gear completely
- Full throttle acceleration and no brakes at all on the way out until station 3
- Going way wide at station 3 on the way out and the way back
- Keep it tight everywhere else
- Get back on the gas as early and as hard as possible
I don't have video but I was on the limiter approaching station 3 on the way out and the way back, then again through the finish.

Congrats Daniel! I guess the changes you've made to the car recently are working, please don't get any faster. Hopefully I can get past my latest trend of coning my 3 fastest runs at events, while much of the time I enjoy being a dirty boy, not so much at autocross and its certainly not the path to victory. The good news is the car worked perfectly and all the new parts I threw at it last month delivered as expected. Hopefully I can translate to into fast & clean runs in the near future.CaptainSquirts wrote:Oh man my first 1st place in M1! Took me a couple of years to finally get one. Wish I was there to receive the sticker.
Thanks again to the powers that be for another great event but please pay the weather bill next time, This was not the FL January that I've come to know and love. Oh and 5 runs would be great!

Despite basically everything that attributes to the feel of the car being new, different, or changed and me being away so long I had a great day. I thought maybe I jumped the gun at coming back and even with no grip on daily driver tires it was an absolute blast and the car ran really well. I had two new people come out with me and they had a great time as too. It was great to see everybody again and I cant wait to get back out.

There were 5 Mazdaspeed Miatas at this event. That is like 1 out of every 1000 made.
Nearly 98,000 NC's in North America, only 4 dared to show up. Slackers.

Mike, welcome to the forum! That run looked smooooooth.
Randy... I thought S2k's revved into the stratosphere? What's with all the shifting in and out of 3rd? The course wasn't THAT fast, was it?

you're thinking of an AP1 with its higher rev limit and longer gears. my 2nd gear tops at 56 ish, ap1 tops at 67. it was an akward course for my gearing as I was on the rev limiter almost (literally) the entire time, often hitting 60. I need to practice my 3 - 2 shifts more anywaysLoren wrote: Tue Jan 16, 2018 3:32 pm Mike, welcome to the forum! That run looked smooooooth.
