August 12 - That "Between Seasons" event

Postby Loren » Sun Aug 12, 2018 5:16 pm

Holy crap it was hot! Thanks to all who braved the heat and a little rain to come play with us, and the usual great bunch of folks who helped get things done throughout the day. (especially the end of the day)

Results are up!

Sorry that I let everyone down by letting Steve beat me. In a VW. Passat Golf. Wagon. Automatic. :bangwall:

(I took a run in that car, the setup is far beyond what you might expect... it's nice!)

Not a Passat. It's a Rabbit/Golf

I am so over having to run in the rain!!
I propose that, from now on, Drew gets to run whenever he wants. I really is a win/win situation.
I did at least get one 99% dry run on my last run and I was also able to avoid cones.

We have no excuse. Preston bested us in the same conditions, but I do believe he does have more rubber than we do... [emoji52]

^^^ That's what I was going to say... 8-)

Thank you to all who partook - in any way. It's a great group!

Yah, Bill's done quite well making that car go and stick. Each time he tweaks it he makes it better. I was running mid-high 54's, with a few cones, and then on run 7 whipped out a 53.5 - from where, that I don't know - but it sure felt like a good run and it was. Loren had just taken his first and only run in the Griswold Racing Golf, with Bill and me both in the car (I tried to sit high and way to one side...) and he ran the same high 54s that I was. I think that may have inspired me.

Also, Dan's Evo is also continually getting better. He loaned it to us for the morning's test run, and it's quite nicely neutral and, as is known, quite fast. Well done, Dan (and thanks)!

August 12 - That "Between Seasons" event

Postby dbeng » Sun Aug 12, 2018 9:54 pm

Well I can see why we only do one autocross in August! The heat was intense, despite the half hour or so of cooler temperature while the rain came through. It was worth braving the rain just to watch Paul Wright's first run in his home built locost on huge cold slick tires :notworthy:
I was beat by the end of the day and for the first time considered abandoning runs after my sixth run, glad I stuck it out though as my 7th run was my fastest and finally got me into the 53s. Only one place and less than .2s below the line of shame :) Loren, I'll get you again one day!
Thanks to Loren, Steve and the rest of the FAST team for organizing another great season. Looking forward to next season already.

My best run from the event. Pictures coming "soon". The course was definitely challenging. Look ahead was king and ruled with a smooth but iron fist. Aaron didn't beat me today so that was good :)

August 12 - That "Between Seasons" event

Postby Loren » Mon Aug 13, 2018 2:13 am

Still mostly suffering from "little improvement after the first run or two", as I have most of this year. I'm starting to think that it might not be a terrible thing. I need to find someone who can drive the Mirage faster than I can to verify that I'm getting all or most of what I can out of it.

Anyway, today's first 3 runs were it for me. 53.6, 53.5 and 53.7. Coned the first two, so 53.700 was best. After that, I did a run showing somebody around the course (not trying to be fast, just trying to show the line and how to not overdrive, then a 53.9. Did a run in Bill's VW (54.9 with two passengers). A really slow run in Ed Hay's Corolla on very generic all-seasons. And then I made my last run trying to catch Steve's 53.5 and pulled a 54.0.

Pretty happy that my runs were that consistent and relatively fast. All of the 5 "flat out" runs that I did in my car, all were within a half-second.

First let me say I eat up all of these car setup complements [emoji7] as it (car setup) is my little thought obsession. There are so many good threads on this forum about setup to learn from.

I kept overdriving the back side and never found a good turnaround line. Steve and Loren both beat me, handily. As noted, Loren drove our car with an extra 360-400 lbs of balast :). Both were obviously smoother than me, especially on the back side.

I didn't see all the runs but my impression is that course workers at this event were on their game [emoji106]

August 12 - That "Between Seasons" event

Postby CaptainSquirts » Mon Aug 13, 2018 9:38 am

That was an interesting event. First time driving in the rain and it's kinda fun. I can see why people would get annoyed with it having to deal with it multiple times in a row at events.

Steve, you blasted me with your tech run. You had 2 extra people, took the slalom before the turn around on the "less efficient" line and still got over 1 1/2 or so seconds than me... Impressive. He probably could've gotten into the 49's with all the extra baggage and warmed up tires. I tend to not be fast on the initial runs and by the time the 7th and 8th runs started to get dry I never really got into an attacking the course groove, plus spinning out when it was slippery made me worry the back end would slip again even though it was dry mentality . Shows the skill difference of people knocking out the top times with just the 7th and 8th runs being dry right from the get go.

I was told 51 flat. Plus, what, 3 cones?
Didn't know you recorded that...but thanks - good for learning! I can see where I coulda/shoulda cleaned up my line and used the throttle a little differently. :)

I was hoping for some more really wet, sliding around pics, but I suppose you were trying to stay dry when it was pouring. I'll allow it. :chuckle:
