Had fun but unfortunately the day didn't go as planned. Had a blast with the co-drives. Thanks guys.

As for my new car the only good thing I can say is it didn't burn a drop of oil and the diff is still in 1 pice. When will I learn going cheap always bites me lol

Yea, less braking and more wheel cranking I think.

I agree. Flying it into the turnaround in a way that seemed like "theres no way this is going to work" is what did the trick for me.. as I mentioned before, not the correct way to go about the Chicago box haha

So 3 parts stick out for me, but I have no video to confirm. First, to make the way out clean I needed some bigger arches, and I never did it right. Second, and as mentioned, the turnaround finally came together by going wide and tightening it up as I prepared for the return. I carried much more speed when I finally realized it. Unfortunately I figured that out on the 9th run. And last, the entry to the left was the best choice for me on the 3 cone slalom; it just required a quick stab of the breaks to fully prepare for the Chicago box. Luckily I only felt that I came in too quickly once or twice, not bad. Oh, and I coned away my 30.xx run!

Tight and fast slaloms; fun for drivers, not so much for course workers :snicker: Ryan gave me the advice about taking the way out in bigger arches and it made it much easier to squeeze through them. Tried to sneak third gear in a few times going out and then would forget to arch it wide, sucks because I think that would’ve been faster this time than bouncing off the limiter as much as I was. Here’s one where I grabbed third, and hit a cone or three. Was slow on the turnaround this run and was sloppy in the Chicago box, still tied my fastest of 30.9

1/6/19 - Bonus Event in the Bag

The outgoing side was definitely NOT a slalom. It was a set of esses. Trying to drive it like anything else would have been a mistake.

I, too, found that powering into the turn-around was best. In my case, I was taking the crossover in 3rd (on my last couple runs, not in the video), tapping the brake, grabbing second, tracking out to the first cone wall, braking again, turning in more and carrying that arc through the turn.

The Chicago Box was just an exercise in choosing your braking point. Braking too late was, as usual, a bad thing.

I was impressed by how quickly I was able to make that box turn and get back to the left and straighten out. I'm not sure that would have been as tidy with my previous setup. There was plenty of room to track out there, I was just trying to minimize distance.

So what year beater Miata did you find this time? Or do we have to wait and see Saturday? I think you should've leased a new $10k Chevy Spark for 2 years instead.

Some day you people will learn that the ONLY reason you got that fast time is because you shortened the course hitting those cones  This isn't bumper pool you know.

1/6/19 - Bonus Event in the Bag

Postby mymomswagon » Tue Jan 08, 2019 4:31 pm

this could have been a great event for me to practice 'how to react to snap oversteer', but...since I didn't think of that in advance, missed opportunity.

Steve clearly likes a looser car than I do :)

Course work was good, mainly because I lucked out and drew station 3. Other than keeping an eye on that silver miata :) , it was pretty serene.

Thank you Loren and Steve for putting this bonus event together!

Y'all just don't know how hard it is to do work assignments, especially for a small event like this! For this one, you know going in that either Station 1 or 2 is going to be busy. Station 3 shouldn't be busy. And Station 4 has the potential to be busy. (I think for some groups, station 4 was busier than 2)

So, we opted to put single workers on 3 and 4, and double-up on 1 and 2. We had some novice course workers, they can't be solo... and the usual assortment of people who can't or shouldn't run... and that really limits our options as to where to put people. Bill happened to have the earliest DOB of all the folks who were working course at the time he went out, and he's plenty experienced to handle working solo, so he got station 3. Y'all young, fit and experienced folks... we really do try to throw you a bone when we can... but, sometimes the best place for you is right there where we know we need somebody who is both mentally and physically able to keep up.

I do have to agree, course work was pretty excellent for this event. And that's saying something with as few clean runs as there were. :salute:

Top 5 guys hit 31 cones :|

I think the evil part of Loren loves delivering us with some challenging coures. Sometimes even 10 runs isn't enough to figure them out. But man was it fun!

I think a lot of people just couldn't accept that the outgoing side was NOT a slalom, and while you might have thought that you could drive it like a set of "lane changes", that was just a recipe for disaster. If you drove it like a nice set of esses and pointed your car neatly through the wall gaps WAY early... no problem.

I think I hit 2 or 3 cones in 8 runs in my car. Clipped a cone on each of the runs I took in Philip's car.

Course was great, I really enjoyed it. Those 10 runs went REALLY fast. I had a lot of trouble with that Chicago box, I think I was attacking it all wrong.

Here's my best run. Any criticism is greatly appreciated.

I'd have used 3rd gear on the way out. Maybe not on the way back. Trying to downshift on approach to the Chicago box would not have been fun. But, you had plenty of time to grab a downshift in the turn-around.

I tried going to third on my final run but, I probably should have tried it earlier since it seems it was needed. I was out of gear way early on the way out.

Ok, so I was waiting too long to get on the brakes I think. Seems like braking before the entrance was the way to go. Thanks Joe!
