Question on seats

Postby Evil MS3 » Tue Feb 19, 2019 2:56 pm

So, I'm a tall guy (maybe you noticed) and I for some reason have chosen the Miata as my autox weapon of choice.I'm really enjoying S4 and wouldn't mind running it for at least another season, but I'd also really like to be more comfortable in the car. I'd really like to put a fixed back kirkey style seat (with supporting mods like seat back brace etc) but I'm not liking that this sounds like it would put me into modified class.

Is this the case for what I want to do?

I'd really like to do it to gain some extra headroom as the setup I want will drop my butt almost 3".

It's there any wiggle room in this? Or anyone else have any thoughts/ideas?

Have you done a foam-ectomy? If not that's a free mod that will help you get by in the meantime.

Yeah I've been meaning to do that but was going to pick up a nicer seat since the seat fabric on mine has a bunch of tears in the driver's seat only. But then thought, why send the money on that when you want to go with an aluminum seat?

Plus, i have a feeling the previous owner already did the process also. Lol

"Replacement of driver or passenger seats with non-reclining race seats."

A seat swap moves you to mod, unless the new seat reclines.

Andrew's suggestion is good.
You can also remove the sliding seat mount and fashion a mount for the seat such that it mounts directly to the floor.

I just saw a bunch of reclining performance seats really cheap in Jeg's latest catalog. You could do both seats so they match.

Question on seats

Postby Loren » Tue Feb 19, 2019 7:11 pm

The seat rule has two main purposes.

1. A "stock" car shouldn't look like a race car. Noobs shouldn't show up an an autocross and see people running stock with full race seats and get the impression that they need to do that kind of thing to be competitive in stock.

2. A driver who's willing to give up the comfort of a heavy stock seat shouldn't be allowed the weight advantage of a race seat over the person who... you know... actually wants to compete in a STOCK car.

If you were to run with SCCA, you'd have to run a stock seat. Period. Even cutting foam out of it is not allowed.

We allow you to fit an aftermarket seat, but it has to be a reclining "stock replacement" style seat.

I understand your dilemma. And we've given you an out. Find a reclining seat that suits you better. Or, as Steve noted, the FAST rule set is largely "if the rules don't say you CAN'T, then you CAN"... you must have a stock style reclining seat. Nothing says you can't change the way it is mounted to the car. As long as it's safe.

The "Push Harder, Suck Less" philosophy explained:
Push Harder - Drive as close to the limit of your tires as possible.
Suck Less - Drive something resembling a proper racing line.

Ok, sounds good. I have some choices to make if I want to stay stock it seems.

Appreciate everybody's input :)
