What would it take to set up a camera over the timing monitor (or even just broadcast the video feed right from the timing computer) and live stream it to YouTube?
Would be the easiest possible way (maybe) to get live timing. At the very least, it would save a bunch of people from having to walk over to the monitor to check their times.
Anybody done anything like that?

Yeah, I know that can be done. But, it's more of a hassle. We've tried it before. Unless they've finally worked the bugs out of it, it's never been very reliable.
Streaming video seems like pretty simple technology to keep running these days. Set it and forget it.
Just a random thought that I had.

If you kept the broadcast video to a lower quality resolution it shouldn’t use a ton of data.
Not sure if every connection pulls from the broadcaster(doubt it) or if it goes through a server in the middle to offload the network traffic off of the broadcasting phone.

Can't argue with that.
I played with it last night. Super easy to stream to FB from a phone. Then I looked at YouTube... and YouTube and there you can broadcast your computer screen on a live stream. It's for gamers to stream their games, but it would work for this. I'm waiting to get my YouTube streaming account approved, then I'll test it.

Okay, YouTube live streaming of computer screen works great!
Next thing to play with is getting my phone hotspot to work with the laptop. In theory, my new Verizon plan includes unlimited data and hotspot. Time to figure out how to use it!

Well, that was too easy!
We'll experiment with this at the next event. But, we should be able to easily stream exactly what you see on the computer monitor outside the trailer directly to YouTube. All we need is a wifi hot spot (my phone or someone else's), and boom. You don't have to walk to the trailer to check times any more!

Keep in mind unlimited data does not necessarily mean unlimited at the same speed. Some providers throttle after so many GB. Check Google etc/call to make sure. AT&T throttled mine after 25gb even though I had the 'unlimited' plan. Per some sites, they plausibly deny but...

That's why we test, I suppose.
I'm a VERY low data user. Like 1-2 GB per month. The only reason we went unlimited was that it was only $15 more than the 2GB plan, and we like to just not have to worry about it.
Looks like a 720p stream is supposed to use about .9GB per hour. So, maybe I'll burn 8-10 GB for a day of autocross?
I was just amazed at how easy this whole thing is to set up. Gotta love modern technology!

Tested at the last event. Set up a sub-account on YouTube for FAST. And it only used about 1.6 GB of data for the whole day. Pretty cool!
So, if you want to find the live timing stream during an event, just go to YouTube and search "Drive Fast Live Timing" and that should get you there.
