Replacing the Garage Ceiling

So, this happened:
Groj Ceiling.jpg
I guess it's going to have to become a "project" of sorts. I've no desire to hang new sheetrock on the ceiling, though. So, at a minimum, that part will be farmed out.

I don't want this to happen again, so we're going to pull the whole ceiling out and replace it. I'll probably drop in some round LED canless "can lights" like I used in the kitchen to light the place up. And I'm thinking about dropping some stubs from the trusses to put a little shelf above the garage door to store long, skinny stuff. Would be nice to have a place that can store a 4x8 sheet of whatever, and long boards, pipes or whatever.

The fun never ends, right?

Very happy that this didn't do a lot of damage to the cars! I got some scuffs in the clearcoat in a couple places on my car. But, no broken glass or anything major.

Yeah, just some clear coat scuffing on the Smart. No broken glass or dents or anything.

The project is likely to include a side-project. The ceiling in my entryway outside the front door is also sagging. I'll probably DIY that one.

The joys of owning an older home, right?

Replacing the Garage Ceiling

Current Status:

I've cleared off all of the top shelves and most of the stuff on the floor so that the drywall guy can work. He's supposed to start on it Wednesday morning, will take 2-3 days. He talked me into not replacing the whole ceiling, instead just replacing the sheet that fell, and another sheet that's sagging. The rest he's going to strip the texture off of, re-screw and skim-coat. (I don't feel the need for a texture in the garage)

This is going to cost me $2k!

But, hopefully, it will hold up for another 40 years.

On the plus side... I've moved a lot of crap out of the garage. Good time to declutter, I suppose. Anybody need any NA/NB Miata parts?

Replacing the Garage Ceiling

Okay, the ceiling job is done! I've got some paint touch-up to do, but it's done.

I also installed a set of 6" LED ceiling lights. I bought a pack of 12 and used 11 of them. They're 12 watts each for a total of 132 watts. Each one is equivalent to about a 100-watt incandescent bulb. So, at full bright, it's like 1100 watts of well-distributed incandescent light.

All that for the power of three 40-watt bulbs! And they're cheap! The 12-pack was only $99. Add some wire that I already had, and a $23 smart dimmer, and voila!

I've got a ceiling rack to install. That will give me an out-of-the-way place to store long, thin stuff, up to a full 4x8 sheet. That'll be nice.

Once that's installed, all I have to do is a bunch of cleaning and organizing. That's a task that I've never fully completed. We'll see how far I get this time... :dunno:

Replacing the Garage Ceiling

I'm talking to my garage lights now. Never thought I'd be one of those people.

My camera adjusts VERY well to light levels, so the difference in light levels looks a lot less in the video. The first level is 20%. The next level is 40, then 65. There's not a huge difference between about 80 and 100%, and the lights last longer on a lower setting, so I'll probably leave them somewhere between 65 and 80.

I can tweak the voice commands to whatever levels (and language) I want. And there is still a switch on the wall that I can use, as well.

Yes, I'm a nerd.

I don't know what's up with the forum video linking. It used to work.

Lookin' good, sir.
Next time I'm around, and if you haven't scrapped it all, I might rifle through your Miata parts stash. Ya never know...

Replacing the Garage Ceiling

Slowly getting back to normal.

Got the ceiling rack installed. That's nice. All the "spare" wood scraps that were either on the floor or leaning against a wall somewhere are now up out of the way.

Cleaned all of the top shelves and the top of the garage door opener, etc. Got rid of all the remaining chunks of ceiling texture and associated dust. Vacuumed all the visible dusty stuff off of the other shelves, and the floor around the bottom of the shelves. Then hosed the floor with some scrubbing. My old painted floor looks like complete crap. But, at least it's fairly clean!

Cars are back in the garage, yay!

I've still got more cleaning to do, and I need to get the rest of the stuff out of the entryway back into the garage. And get rid of some shit.
