Why are karts allowed?

We've regularly had 15 minute "gaps" between heats for various reasons. Most were not as entertaining as watching a kart go round the course.

I see no problem with having some karts show up.

15 minute between friends and free entertainment too! :D

I think it is just lazy.

X2. I enjoy seeing it run. BUT.... I would enjoy seeing a Shift Kart run even more. So, what are you waiting for? Trade up John! :D

Actually only one kart ran, and with only one of it's drivers, the 2nd driver ran it at the end of the event.

LOL no it wasn't. The kart ran back to back, high 40 second runs, plus 20-30 seconds (seriously) to get back to the starting line, a time that would be much shorter when we normally have start and finish a little closer and less bumps in the way.

So even with 1 minute runs and 30 seconds between runs (which is more time than it took), for 6 runs that is 9 minutes per driver. We ran 1 driver at the end of group 2, and one at the very END of the day (end of group 3). So allowing for more time than it took in reality that's 18 minutes total, a wee bit closer to 15 than 30, and I'd be surprised if BOTH drivers took up 15 minutes that day. Might be an issue if lots of karts show up, but I don't see that happening realistically.

Maybe I value my free time less than others, but I see no reason I can't spare a few extra minutes for karts to run at events.

There is no reason not to allow carts. There is also no reason the carts have to run seperately. SCCA only clears the course and grid for the kids carts. Adult carts run with the cars. This was true at the Atlanta national event and the Nationals in Topeka. If they run with the cars, likely grouped with the other small open wheeled cars there shouldn't be a problem. Letting carts run allows people to autocross in a real race type envirnment for a small investment.

Permission was requested before anyone actually entered a kart the first time. And a lot of discussion and thought went in to the decision to allow karts to run.

Just as information, the kart ruleset that was set up is here:
http://www.kickflop.net/autocrossbb/viewtopic.php?t=294" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

There's definitely a no-man's land with running karts - one or two, 15 min. or so, ok, we can support the Fun part of our name. And enough to run their own run-group, that's probably ok, too. It's the in-between that could be a logistical problem (not that it's likely)...
